Mario Tarililiu from the Vanuatu Climate Action Network shares his hopes for COP31 following the Pre-COP climate conference in Fiji, where Pacific youth have been making their voices heard and calling for meaningful climate action.

For young people across Vanuatu and the Pacific, the future is at stake. Their voices must be heard, and their calls for action must translate into real commitments and change.

🎥 Watch Mario share his story and what he hopes to see come out of COP31.

Meet 19-year-old Brenda, a youth climate advocate from Vanuatu, who is calling on young people to speak up and take action for their future.

"It is important for young people to have a voice in climate and decision-making because it will help other youth to see the importance of climate change and its impact on our country and communities.”

Her message to leaders: listen to young people’s voices and make their future a priority.

When communities have access to clean, safe and accessible toilets, they can recover from disasters with greater health, dignity and resilience - helping families rebuild safely and better prepare for future emergencies.

A long-standing dream has become a reality for Blacksands Silas Community!

After 30+ years of relying on basic makeshift toilets, the community has officially opened its first VIP toilet facility, marking an important step forward for sanitation, dignity and wellbeing.

For women and girls, the new facility provides much-needed privacy and safety. It will be especially valuable for women during pregnancy, giving them access to a safer and more suitable toilet instead of having to rely on old makeshift facilities.

The achievement also reflects the strength of community ownership. Community members contributed to completing the facility, working alongside partners to turn a long-standing need into a reality.

While work is still ongoing, the facility is already providing women and girls with improved access to safer sanitation. A second similar VIP toilet facility is also under construction, bringing further support to the community.

Blacksands Silas Community is one of 7 communities supported through Oxfam’s 2025–2026 earthquake recovery programme in Efate: Blacksands Silas, Teouma Fork Road, Teouma (Rentapau), Erangorango Sector 3, Tamalasi at Tebakor, Lumauri at Manples and Ohlen 73.

Across these communities, the programme has supported toilet construction, water tanks, water-storage rehabilitation and community-based WASH and hygiene training.

The project is funded by Oxfam Great Britain and implemented by Wan Smolbag, Vanuatu Association of NGOs, Oxfam in the Pacific in Vanuatu and supported by the SHEFA Provincial Government Council as part of the recovery response following the 2024 earthquake in Efate.

A new facility, a stronger sense of dignity, and a healthier future for the Silas Community in Blacksands 💚

Vanuatu | Day 3 — Youth Voices into Action ✊🏽

The final day of COY26 Vanuatu, convened by the Vanuatu Climate Action Network (VCAN), brought powerful youth voices, commitments and calls for action to the forefront.

From the signing of the Youth Declaration to the handover of the LCOY petition and the presentation of the Vanuatu COY26 Statement, young people put forward their priorities and aspirations for a more resilient and climate-just Vanuatu.

As Oxfam in the Pacific in Vanuatu, we’re proud to support spaces that enable young people to participate, organise and bring their perspectives into conversations on climate change and the future of their communities.

A key theme throughout COY26 was the importance of listening to young people — including on issues such as youth mental health and cultural identity in a changing climate.

Thank you to VCAN, World Vision International - Vanuatu, young participants, partners, speakers, facilitators and everyone who contributed to making COY26 possible.

Youth voices matter. Youth leadership matters. And creating space for those voices is an important part of climate action 🇻🇺

Day 2 of Vanuatu 2026: From ideas to action!

Young participants took their climate discussions beyond the workshop and into the community, joining a beach clean-up at Ifira Point.

After exploring culture, biodiversity, traditional knowledge and environmental stewardship, they put those conversations into practice by taking action to help protect Vanuatu’s coastal environment.

👏🏽 Thank you to the Department of Environmental Protection and Conservation DEPC for partnering with the Vanuatu Climate Action Network and coordinating the clean-up.

Young people are helping shape the change they want to see.

Vanuatu — Day 1 complete!

Great to see young climate champions, civil society, government and partners coming together for COY26 Vanuatu, convened by the Vanuatu Climate Action Network (VCAN).

Day 1 created space for young people to learn, share experiences and raise their voices on issues that matter, from youth advocacy to climate loss and damage.

As Oxfam in the Pacific in Vanuatu, we’re proud to support spaces that bring young people together and strengthen their participation in shaping Vanuatu’s climate action.

The conversations have started, the connections are growing, and there’s much more to come.

Day 2, let’s keep the momentum going! 🌱🌏

Great to see how far cash-based assistance has come in Vanuatu! 🇻🇺

Since the national pilot rollout led by Oxfam in Vanuatu and its partners from 2017 to 2022, supporting multiple disaster responses across the country, significant progress has been made in strengthening systems, partnerships and local capacity to deliver assistance quickly when disasters strike.

The continued work of the Vanuatu Cash Working Group is helping build on that foundation, making cash assistance faster, more coordinated and more effective when communities need it most.

Strong systems built before disasters save time when it matters most.

💵 Getting cash assistance ready before disaster strikes 🇻🇺

The Vanuatu Cash Working Group is back in action, bringing together partners to strengthen how cash and voucher assistance is prepared, coordinated and delivered across Vanuatu.

At its second meeting, the group focused on the practical building blocks needed for faster and more effective cash responses, from market assessments and response mapping to agreed transfer values, stronger local capacity and links with national social protection systems.

The goal: stronger coordination now, so cash assistance can reach people quickly and effectively when it is needed most.

Oxfam acknowledges and commends Vanuatu Association of NGOs (VANGO) for its effective delivery of support to the Ohlen 73 Council of Chiefs through the provision of a 10,000-litre water tank to improve access to safe water and strengthen WASH outcomes in the community.

This support was made possible through funding from Oxfam Great Britain, enabling practical, community-led action in partnership with local organisations and traditional leadership structures.

Oxfam values VANGO’s continued role in working with communities across Vanuatu to deliver inclusive and locally driven development outcomes.
