BPP impact in action: empowering women and communities with clean energy in Vanuatu ⚡🌺
A partnership between ActionAid Australia, ActionAid Vanuatu, PowerWells, the Women I Tok Tok Tugeta (WITTT) network and the Australian Government through the is transforming lives in Lawital, North Tanna.
What started as limited, unreliable lighting from kerosene lamps and candles is now a community powered by clean, off-grid solar energy designed, delivered and led by women.
The impact at a glance:
• 1,380 people gaining reliable access to clean energy
• 119 households now have solar lighting and charging systems
• 60 women trained, including 3 now working as solar technicians
• 10 solar streetlights improving safety in public spaces
• 5 community centres powered with solar energy
This is not only about energy access but opportunity. With reliable power, women are increasing income through home-based businesses, children have the light they need to study, and communities feel safer and more connected after dark. Access to phone charging is also strengthening communication and disaster preparedness in a cyclone-prone region.
At the heart of this project is a women-led PAYGo model driving financial sustainability, local ownership and long-term impact. Women are not only managing the system, but leading installation and maintenance, earning income and reshaping traditional roles in their community.
