🌟 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬

Last week, our August volunteers visited KOTO Dream School, Vietnam’s first social enterprise, which supports at-risk and disadvantaged young people through holistic hospitality training that blends vocational education, life skills, and hands-on experience.

Here’s a quick look at what the team got up to:

🩺 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐬: Volunteers worked alongside local doctors and medical students to provide health checks for 100+ students and staff.

📚 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 50+ books were donated by a small group of local medical volunteers and handed over to the school's library, along with 100+ essential medicines added to its medicine cabinet.

🏫 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫: The team attended an inspiring presentation and then got a guided tour of KOTO’s campus, gaining deeper insight into KOTO’s work, training programmes, and the community it supports.

A meaningful afternoon of impact, connection, and learning, guided by the “Know One, Teach One” ethos, showing how every small act of service can help build brighter futures. 💚

💌 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 “𝐕𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐧𝐚𝐦-𝐒𝐢𝐜𝐤” 𝐃𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐫

Not long after our July Medical High School Special Programme concluded, an unexpected letter landed in our inbox.

It was from a parent, writing about her daughter’s first medical volunteering experience in Vietnam. Among the many kind words, one line stayed with us: she wasn't homesick after coming home. She was “Vietnam-sick.” 🇻🇳

These are the moments that remind us why we do what we do. Behind every placement, hospital day, cultural experience, and new friendship is a young person taking something home with them that might last far beyond the programme itself.

🌽 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐢 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐮: 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐲 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬

Our Community Development volunteers got down to some seriously "corny" business in Mai Chau, spending part of their day alongside local farmers in the fields.

Armed with garden hoes and sickles, they helped cut down the remaining corn stalks after the harvest, getting a hands-on look at one of the many jobs that goes into keeping the fields ready for the next season.

Then came the corn shelling. One by one, the kernels came off, with the volunteers quickly getting into the rhythm of the work, and, naturally, plenty of laughs (and calluses) along the way.

🌟 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬

Our June Medical High School Special Group and Flexi volunteers visited a care community that supports children and adults living with disabilities, as well as individuals receiving long-term care and rehabilitation, to deliver a dental health education session for the children.

Throughout the afternoon, the volunteers brought oral health to life with brushing demonstrations, games, quizzes, and colouring activities, making the session fun, interactive, and full of energy. To wrap up, each child received a dental hygiene kit to help them keep up those healthy habits at home.

The visit concluded with a meeting with the Village Director, where the group learned more about the village's history, its mission, and the community it serves.

💪 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫

On Rhianna and Olivia's first morning at the hospital, communication came in fragments.

A smile. A nod. A translation app passed back and forth between screens.

Somewhere along the way, that stopped feeling like a barrier.

Over the following week, they worked alongside physiotherapists, helped guide patients through post-operative rehabilitation, and discovered that even without a shared language, encouragement often looks the same.

Their internship then took them through the Cardiovascular & Thoracic Intensive Care Unit and Neurosurgery, where they witnessed different stages of recovery, from intensive care to a patient's first steps back on their feet.

When it came time to conclude their placement, returning to Rehabilitation felt like coming back to where it all began.

At the team's invitation, the two final-year physiotherapy students from the UK shared how common shoulder conditions are assessed and managed in the NHS before demonstrating a series of rehabilitation exercises together. What followed was less of a lecture than a professional exchange, with questions, comparisons, and conversations flowing both ways.

Perhaps that's the best way to describe their time at the placement.

Not as students watching from the sidelines, but as future physiotherapists working shoulder to shoulder with the people who welcomed them from day one.

🩺 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐞

As part of their medical internship at Ha D**g General Hospital, 24 Projects Abroad volunteers from Australia, the United States, Ireland, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Switzerland, South Africa, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and Italy recently took part in a live surgical case conference unlike any ordinary classroom.

Broadcast directly from the operating theatre, the session followed a laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair performed by the hospital's Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery. Beyond observing the procedure in real time, the students were invited to ask questions throughout the operation, discussing diagnosis, treatment decisions, minimally invasive techniques, and surgical practice with the operating surgeons.

With support from our local team, the discussion became an interactive learning experience, offering a closer look not only at the procedure itself but also at the clinical reasoning behind it.

A heartfelt thank you to Ha D**g General Hospital and the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery for creating such an engaging opportunity for our volunteers. Experiences like these continue to bridge medical education across cultures and healthcare systems.

🌟 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬

In celebration of the 79th War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day, our Medical High School Special Group joined healthcare staff from their placement at a community outreach event, providing free health check-ups for People with Meritorious Services to the Revolution and their kins.

Moving from station to station, the students observed a wide range of examinations, from ENT, dental, and vision screenings to ECGs and ultrasound assessments, gaining a closer look at how each check-up contributes to a patient's overall care. Between consultations, they also helped distribute supplements to the elderly participants, lending an extra pair of hands wherever they were needed.

For many, it was a reminder that healthcare isn't confined to hospital wards. Sometimes, it takes shape in community halls, through prevention, early detection, and the simple act of showing up for those who have given so much.

A sincere thank you to the dedicated team at the hospital for welcoming our students and allowing them to be part of such a meaningful day of service. 💙

🗺️ 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐎𝐮𝐭. 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐈𝐧.

Between placements, evenings, and weekend breaks, Rhianna and Olivia, PT students from Liverpool University, managed to fill their camera rolls with a little more than just work.

One weekend took them to Sa Pa, where mountain views came with a side of go-karts and muddy shoes. Another was spent cruising through the emerald waters of Lan Ha Bay, swapping city traffic for limestone cliffs.

Back in Hanoi, they wandered through the Botanical Garden, stopped by the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and slowly worked their way through the city one afternoon at a time.

A placement might bring you to Vietnam. What you do after after clocking out is entirely up to you.
