On this day thirty-nine years ago, hundreds and thousands of Filipinos hailing from various walks of life marched down to gather along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue. Driven by a shared commitment to restoring democracy in their beloved nation, their peaceful yet resolute demonstration of courage ultimately led to the downfall of the Marcos Sr. dictatorship.
A peaceful uprising led by the Filipino people toppled a two-decade-long regime – one that had thrived at the cost of their own blood, sweat, and sacrifice.
Today, as we commemorate the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, we are reminded of this very fact. True power lies not in the hands of those in government but in the everyday Filipino who works tirelessly to build, uplift, and shape the nation's future.
In an era where revisionist efforts threaten to distort our history, we must remain vigilant, critical, and most importantly, vocal. Now, more than ever, our voices must be unyielding in challenging false narratives, defending the truth, and standing firm against the blatant attempts to rewrite history. As the 2025 Midterm Elections draw closer, there is a greater urgency to safeguard and uphold our shared reality. May we be reminded of the lessons of the past as we choose the next leaders of our government.
Never again should we remain mum and blind to the deliberate efforts to stronghold the state, silence dissent, and erode the very foundations of democracy. The spirit of EDSA is not merely one of remembrance but one of action – ensuring that the hard-won legacies of the past continue to guide us in safeguarding democracy for generations to come.
