Action Solidarité Nord Vietnam Humanitary project North Vietnam (Sapa): hygiene awareness & distribution of hygienic materials, educational programs, raise awareness of tourism impact

Who are we ? We are two French from Montpellier, and we left our country late 2015 to explore Asian countries, in a spirit of sharing and solidarity, with northern Vietnam as first destination. The origin of this project

It all started with a stop around the tourist town of Sapa and an immersion of fortnight in the ethnic village of Ta Phin. An experience closer to these minority populations, whi

ch allowed us to identify the gaps and needs of these peoples excluded, in many ways, of Vietnamese society and its development. After traveling the roads of Asia, we have decided to return in this part of Vietnam at the beginning of May 2016, to mount a humanitarian project. So we created a prize pool online for all persons wishing to act with us and our page where we present every day the evolution of our actions. Why this humanitarian project ? Sanitary conditions: The hygienic living conditions of these populations are of concern (Lack of awareness of basic hygiene gestures, lack of sanitary infrastructures, mistrust on the part of some local on the modernization of care and hygiene ...). Tourists not enough responsible: Unfortunately, ignorance and therefore unintentionally, tourists can have a negative impact on local populations. (Distributions of sweets to children causing major health problems, purchasing products from children selling on the street that encourage deschooling and exploitation of these...) The desire to learn of ethnic minorities: Practicing subsistence farming, their income mostly comes from tourism. A higher level of foreign language will improve their communication skills and so, they will be able to enjoy wider incomes from tourism. Our actions since 5 months

In early May 2016, we worked in two schools of the Hmong village of Y Linh Ho where we distributed school supplies, clothing, hygiene material and where we did hygiene awareness meetings, with the support of local guides. Then the summer holidays arrived. So we decided to act on the problems we found during our first contacts with ethnic minorities. Survey in ethnic villages

To understand better and identify the needs of ethnic minorities in terms of hygiene, we realized with the participation of the social enterprise ETHOS, surveys in two Hmong villages around Sapa. These collected data show that hygiene knowledge, daily practice of hygiene and the lack of hygiene infrastructure of the ethnic minorities are worrying. It also appears that the establishment of awareness meeting and distribution enhances the understanding of the origin of diseases, necessary for the daily application of hygiene practices. Awareness of ethnic minorities to corporal hygiene. We have organized hygiene awareness meetings in ethnic villages, followed by hygiene materials distribution. During these meetings, we educated around 1,000 villagers and supported the dentist fees for 14 of them. Creation of an educational kit

Here, the teachers merely repeat the hygiene rules with no real explanations and without educational support. So we created a kit to train teachers by providing them the necessary resources for the implementation of an awareness program on hygiene in their schools. Creation of a "Guide for mindful traveler"

We decided to create a "Guide for mindful traveler" in the form of comics to educate tourists and so reduce the negative impact that tourism can have on minorities. This guide, in English / French and Vietnamese / Chinese, is intended to be widely distributed around Sapa (hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, tourist attractions ...) and maybe beyond. To do this, we obtained the support of the tourism office of Sapa. Creation of a learning support via an exchange between tourists and local

The tourism sector is in expansion in Sapa, so we created a "Booklet for mindful travelers" in English and French, which consists of : A presentation of the issues in Sapa and their 'solutions', a language course and a summary of hygiene awareness. This booklet is intended for distribution in the homestays of ethnic villages, to encourage travelers who stay there to share their knowledge with the villagers. During our stay at Ta Phin we have given language courses to the villagers and most of the tourists were enthusiastic about the idea of sharing their knowledge. Our next actions

Hygiene awareness meeting in primary and secondary schools (children 7-15 years) in ethnic villages, distribution of the "educational kit" for teachers and donation of soaps to schools. Meeting of awareness and distribution of hygiene materials in the ethnic villages. Printing and distribution of the 'Booklet for mindful travelers" and "responsible traveler's guide". To perform these actions, we will rely on our support networks present on site. Without you, this project will not take place, while the needs of these mountain people are enormous. Today we are able to improve their living conditions by organizing hygiene awareness meetings in schools and by educating tourists to a responsible and solidarity tourism. Take action with us to raise hygiene awareness from locals and make tourism an opportunity for these ethnic minorities to improve their living conditions! " Sapa district is one of the poorest in Vietnam. With an average salary of $24 / month (survey 2009), buying hygiene products is a real investment for these peoples. Few months ago, a 2 years old boy died because of an infected tooth decay. "

Hello everyone, we are sharing some very sad news that, as you can imagine, is very upsetting to us.

This saturday, September 7, typhoon Yagi devastated the north of Vietnam where we lived, and part of Southeast Asia. Experts are talking about the most violent typhoon in 30 years.

In Vietnam, the death toll now stands at 226 and 104 people are missing. According to UNICEF, more than 140,000 homes have been damaged, 3,400 have been completely destroyed as well as 210,000 ha of crops (source: Ministry of Agriculture).

The province of Sapa has not been spared by this terrible climatic event. About twenty people are said to have died and many houses have been destroyed.

We are currently trying to get in touch with our friends living in Sapa. Although we do not have a response from all of them yet, the majority of our friends are doing well, as are their families. Most of them were able to harvest rice before the typhoon hit, thus ensuring their food security for the months to come. But the material damage is unfortunately significant for some of them. We know their resilience and this reassures us despite the violence of what they have been through and the difficulties that lie ahead.

Despite the strong solidarity of the Vietnamese people, the needs of the affected populations are numerous (food, clothing, accommodation, hygiene materials, etc.). It is for these reasons that, despite the cessation of our activities on site, we invite you to support them in this ordeal.

Blue Dragon, an association with which we have collaborated, is currently raising funds to help people in need and more particularly to provide food and emergency shelter.

Please share and donate to help them if you can! Every bit of help is valuable.

Thank you!

Julien and Emie
