A day in the life of Alina, a volunteer from Germany, working in the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) quarantine area! (English Below)

Trong năm nay, Chương trình Bảo tồn Rùa Châu Á Asian Turtle Program (ATP), phối hợp cùng Trung tâm Bảo tồn Rùa Cúc Phương (TCC), đã tiếp nhận khoảng 300 cá thể rùa, chủ yếu từ các vụ giải cứu và tịch thu liên quan đến hoạt động buôn bán động vật hoang dã trái phép. Trong số đó có 272 cá thể rùa cạn và rùa nước ngọt được tịch thu trong vụ bắt giữ tại Lạng Sơn – vụ tịch thu rùa lớn nhất trong vòng 10 năm qua; và 28 cá thể rùa nguy cấp được hồi hương từ Hàn Quốc về Việt Nam. Hiện tại, tất cả các cá thể này đều đang được cách ly, theo dõi và chăm sóc tại TCC, Vườn quốc gia Cúc Phương - Cuc Phuong National Park.

This year, the Asian Turtle Program (ATP), in cooperation with the Cuc Phuong Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC), has received over 300 turtles, most of them from rescues and confiscations related to the illegal wildlife trade. Among them are 272 tortoises and freshwater turtles confiscated in Lang Son Province, Viet Nam - the largest turtle confiscation in the past 10 years- as well as 28 endangered turtles repatriated from South Korea to Vietnam. All of these turtles are currently being cared for and monitored in the centre’s quarantine area at the TCC in Cuc Phuong National Park, Ninh Binh Province.

Tình nguyện viên Levke chia sẻ về hành trình 1 năm làm TNV bảo tồn Rùa tại TCC 🐢💚
Let’s hear from Levke about her one-year journey as a volunteer at TCC (English below)

Levke bắt đầu đến Vườn Quốc gia Cúc Phương và tham gia tình nguyện tại TCC từ tháng 8 năm 2025. Đến tháng 8 này, cô ấy đã có tròn một năm tình nguyện tại đây.
Trong mắt chúng tôi, Levke luôn mang đến nguồn năng lượng tích cực với nụ cười và sự nhiệt tình trong từng công việc 🥰. Cô từng chia sẻ rằng mình đặc biệt yêu thích những chú rùa. Càng có thời gian làm việc và chăm sóc chúng, Levke càng nhận ra rằng mỗi chú rùa đều có những đặc điểm và cá tính riêng, cùng những biểu cảm rất đáng yêu.
Sau một năm tình nguyện tại TCC, Levke muốn trở về Đức để theo học ngành Thú y, tiếp tục theo đuổi mong muốn được chăm sóc và bảo vệ sức khỏe cho động vật.

Levke first came to Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam and started volunteering at TCC in August 2025. This August marks her one-year anniversary as a volunteer.

Levke has always brought positive energy to the TCC, with her smile and enthusiasm in everything she does🥰. The more time she has spent caring for the turtles, the more she realizes that each turtle has its own unique characteristics and personality.
After one year volunteering at TCC, Levke plans to return to Germany to study Veterinary Medicine and continue pursuing her goal of caring for and protecting animal health.

Mỗi dịp cuối tuần, Trung tâm Bảo tồn Rùa Cúc Phương (TCC) lại đón nhiều lượt du khách đến tham quan. Từ trẻ em đến người lớn; từ du khách Việt Nam đến bạn bè quốc tế đều hào hứng khi có cơ hội được tận mắt chứng kiến các loài rùa cạn và rùa nước ngọt quý hiếm của Việt Nam.
Tại TCC, du khách sẽ được lắng nghe câu chuyện về hành trình giải cứu các cá thể rùa khỏi nạn buôn bán động vật hoang dã trái phép, cũng như những nỗ lực của các cơ quan chức năng và Chương trình Bảo tồn Rùa châu Á (ATP) thuộc Tổ chức Indo-Myanmar (IMC) trong việc đưa chúng trở về môi trường tự nhiên.

Every weekend, Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam, welcomes visitors from all walks of life to the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC). Children, adults and senior visitors, from Vietnam and internationally, enjoy the centre and the opportunity to see some of the amazing and rare tortoise and freshwater turtle species that can be found in Vietnam.

They can learn the stories of the rescue of some of these animals from the illegal wildlife trade and efforts by the authorities and the Asian Turtle Program of Indo-Myanmar Conservation (IMC) to return some of these animals to the wild.
Through guided tours and conservation education programmes, we hope every visit is not only a memorable experience, but also an opportunity to inspire a love for nature and raise awareness of turtle conservation. 💚

Cuc Phuong Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) after the rain... 🌧️🐢

Trung tâm Bảo tồn Rùa Cúc Phương (TCC) sau cơn mưa... 🌧️🐢

Summer in northern Vietnam is often known as the rainy season. At this time of year, rain can come suddenly and very heavily, even when the sun was shining brightly just a few minutes before.

This weather also creates the kind of environment that many freshwater turtles and tortoises enjoy. High humidity, soft ground, and green vegetation provide the natural conditions they love.

Throughout July, it has rained almost every day. After each shower, the whole centre seems to come alive. The trees look fresh and green, puddles remain on the ground, the sounds of animals fill the forest, and the turtles quietly enjoy the environment they are so familiar with.

Last weekend, we captured a few of these moments. We hope you enjoy them with us! 💚

Mùa hè ở miền Bắc Việt Nam thường được người dân địa phương gọi là mùa mưa. Bởi vào mùa này, những cơn mưa rào thường đến rất đột ngột, dù cách đó chỉ vài phút, trời còn đang nắng to.

Đây cũng là đặc điểm thời tiết tạo nên một môi trường sống mà nhiều loài rùa cạn và rùa nước ngọt yêu thích. Một điều kiện tự nhiên có độ ẩm cao, nền đất mềm và thảm thực vật xanh tươi tạo nên nơi sống lý tưởng để chúng sinh trưởng và phát triển.

Suốt tháng 7 này, những cơn mưa gần như ghé thăm TCC mỗi ngày. Và sau mỗi cơn mưa, cả trung tâm như trở nên nhiều sức sống hơn: những tán cây xanh tươi được gột rửa, mặt đất còn đọng nước, tiếng muôn loài gọi nhau giữa lòng rừng già, và những chú rùa lặng lẽ tận hưởng môi trường quen thuộc của mình.

Cuối tuần vừa rồi, chúng tôi đã kịp ghi lại vài khoảnh khắc ấy. Hãy cùng nhau ngắm nhìn những khoảnh khắc đó nhé!

The first-ever release of the Vietnamese Pond Turtle back into the wild. Going Home for the First Time.

HAPPY WORLD TURTLE DAY

In November 2025, a group of 100 critically endangered Vietnamese Pond Turtles (Mauremys annamensis) made the long journey from rescue centres in northern Vietnam to be released in a secret location in a nature reserve in central Vietnam. This was the culmination of over 25 years of conservation efforts to bring the species back from the brink of extinction as part of long-term rewilding efforts.

This is the story of the release and some of the history leading up to this significant event.

The preparation for this release has taken the collaboration of many NGOs, zoos, government agencies, rescue centres and donors over the years of preparation. We would like to say thank you to everyone involved.

Vào ngày 12/05 vừa qua, Công an tỉnh Lạng Sơn đã thu giữ 272 cá thể của 05 loài rùa bản địa cực kỳ nguy cấp từ những kẻ buôn lậu. Bị nhét trong tất đen và nén vào các thùng xốp, nhiều cá thể rùa khi đến nơi đã rơi vào tình trạng mất nước, bị thương và kiệt sức — trong đó có rất nhiều cá thể rùa con còn yếu ớt.

Trung tâm Bảo tồn Rùa Cúc Phương (TCC) hiện đang phải hoạt động trong tình trạng khẩn cấp để tiến hành chăm sóc liên tục cho các cá thể rùa cứu hộ.

Hôm nay (23/5), đúng vào Ngày Quốc tế Rùa, những loài động vật hoang dã nguy cấp này đang rất cần một cơ hội thứ hai để sống sót.

🚨 EMERGENCY TURTLE RESCUE: ONE OF THE LARGEST IN A DECADE! 🚨
On May 12, 2026, authorities in northern Vietnam confiscated 272 individuals of 05 critically endangered native turtle species from smugglers. Packed tightly in black socks and compressed foam boxes, many arrived dehydrated, injured, and highly stressed—including vulnerable juveniles and hatchlings.
The Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) at Cuc Phuong National Park is now operating under emergency conditions to provide intensive care.
With World Turtle Day today (May 23rd), these endangered animals desperately need a second chance.

Công ty Canon hỗ trợ Chương trình Bảo tồn Rùa*

Ngày 26/01/2026, Phòng Môi trường của Công ty Canon đã đến thăm Chương trình Bảo tồn Rùa (TCC) và trao tặng trang thiết bị hỗ trợ công tác bảo tồn. TCC là cơ sở hợp tác giữa Chương trình Rùa châu Á (Tổ chức Bảo tồn Indo - Myanmar) và Vườn quốc gia Cúc Phương. Đây là nơi cứu hộ và nhân giống bảo tồn rùa lớn nhất Việt Nam, với 22/26 loài rùa cạn và rùa nước ngọt bản địa nguy cấp, quý hiếm.

Trong chuyến thăm, đoàn đại diện Công ty Canon tìm hiểu về các loài rùa được bảo tồn tại TCC và các nỗ lực cứu hộ, phục hồi của đội ngũ nhân viên ở đây. Chuyến thăm cũng mang đến cho nhóm cơ hội kinh nghiệm thực tế về cách chăm sóc rùa. Cùng với đội ngũ của TCC, đoàn đã tham gia vào các hoạt động làm giàu môi trường sống cho rùa.

Sự hỗ trợ từ các đối tác như Canon đóng góp ý nghĩa vào những nỗ lực bảo tồn các loài rùa nguy cấp nhất Việt Nam và thế giới, đồng thời tạo động lực kết nối với cộng đồng góp sức cho công tác bảo tồn động vật hoang dã tại Việt Nam.

Support for the Turtle Conservation Centre, Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam

On the 26th January 2026, the Environmental Department of Canon visited the Turtle Conservation Centreto provide equipment and supplies in support of the centre’s conservation work. The TCC is a collaborative facility between Indo-Myanmar Conservation, its Asian Turtle Program and Cuc Phuong National Park. This is Vietnam’s largest animal rescue and conservation breeding centre focused on protection of Vietnam’s endangered tortoise and freshwater turtle species, currently safeguarding 22 of the country’s 26 native species.

During the visit, the Canon team toured the facility to learn more about the turtle species protected at the centre and the rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation efforts carried out by TCC staff. The visit also provided the team with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in turtle husbandry. Together with TCC staff, the Canon team participated in habitat enrichment activities.

The Turtle Conservation Centre plays an important role in protecting some of the world’s most threatened turtle species through rescue, conservation breeding, research, and education. Support from partners such as Canon contributes meaningfully to these efforts and helps strengthen ongoing conservation work in Vietnam.
