📣 INDA Public Lecture

We are pleased to invite you to an upcoming talk by French–Vietnamese architect and urban designer Trung Mai, founder of Adhoc Practice and Hanoi ad hoc () titled:

✨ Form Follows Adhocism ✨

Trung Mai explores adhocism as both a design method and a critical position — a refusal of rigidity and a turn toward architecture as a living process of adaptation. Rooted in the improvisations of everyday Vietnamese life, amongst plastic stools that become both table and chair, sidewalks that transform into living rooms, adhocism celebrates scarcity as a source of invention. Through this lens, architecture is no longer a fixed object, but an open negotiation between the temporary and the permanent, the human and the natural, the planned and the accidental.

Trung Mai (HMONP) () graduated with honors from ENSA Paris-Malaquais and Leibniz Universität Hannover, and previously worked with Atelier Jean Nouvel and Dominique Perrault before establishing his practice in 2020. He is the first Vietnamese architect to win Europan three times (Spain, Italy, and France), and a recipient of numerous international recognitions, including the Prince Claus Seed Award 2024 (NL), IBA’27 (Germany), and Architizer A+ Award 2024 (US). His works have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Architekturmuseum der TU München and Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Berlin, and he has lectured at RMIT Melbourne, Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture, and ENSA Paris Belleville.

Ranh giới mong manh giữa không gian công cộng - chung - riêng, sự chuyển dịch linh hoạt của không gian đô thị Việt Nam, và văn hóa "commoning" (đồng kiến tạo) là những khái niệm đòi hỏi sự phân tích sâu sắc và một tư duy thiết kế đột phá.

This curated selection of projects from the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale explores regeneration as a deliberate, intelligent process rooted in the specific conditions of a place. For decades, the Biennale has been a testing ground for architecture's most urgent ideas, allowing designers, researchers, and institutions to present visions that address evolving environmental, cultural, and social challenges. This year's projects reveal how regeneration, whether of an entire coastal city, a disused industrial site, or a neglected public space, requires more than replacing the old with the new. It calls for a precise reading of existing contexts, the preservation of embedded knowledge, and the careful integration of contemporary needs.

The eight selected works show that regeneration can emerge from multiple starting points: reactivating heritage through adaptive reuse, restoring ecological systems as part of urban planning, developing open and modular strategies for social housing renewal, or layering technological innovation onto historically rooted practices. While the scale of intervention varies, each project demonstrates a sensitivity to what is already there and existing, be it material resources, urban patterns, or cultural memory, and a willingness to work with these assets as catalysts for transformation. Together, they suggest that regeneration must start somewhere, and that its success lies in balancing innovation with the intelligence of what already exists.

The Reincarnated Grid is an adaptive reuse intervention within the abandoned Gia Lam Train Factory. Rather than imposing a new design, it excavates the latent spatial intelligence of the site, treating it as an archaeological imprint of Vietnam's industrial past. The Reincarnated Grid recontextualises Vietnam's industrial legacy and foregrounds the potential of collective knowledge in spatial transformation. The act of repurposing— both materially and conceptually—underscores an alternative paradigm of sustainability, wherein preservation is not merely conservation but a dynamic process of reinvention.
