Google Visits Hanoi Ad hoc: Adhocism as Vietnam’s Adaptive Intelligence

Hanoi Ad hoc was pleased to welcome 30 Google Vice Presidents to our office for a lecture and workshop led by Trung Mai, exploring Adhocism as a driving force in Vietnam’s growth.

The setting itself became part of the conversation. Located in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, the Ad hoc office is conceived as an extension of an existing alley, as pace that blurs the boundaries between architecture and everyday urban life, public and private, formal and informal.

Through Adhocism, we discussed how improvisation, adaptation and resourcefulness can be understood not simply as responses to scarcity, but as forms of collective intelligence: the ability to transform constraints, reuse what already exists and continuously create new possibilities.

Kiến trúc truyền thống vốn được sắp đặt theo một hệ thứ bậc gò bó từ cơ thể, đồ đạc, căn phòng, ngôi nhà cho đến khu phố và thành phố. Cuộc thi năm nay đặt ra câu hỏi đột phá: Điều gì sẽ xảy ra khi ta trích xuất logic tổ chức không gian, xã hội và hành vi của một tỷ lệ để tái cấu trúc nó ở một tỷ lệ hoàn toàn khác?

Đây không phải là thao tác thu phóng vật thể (zoom-in/ zoom-out) hay mô phỏng hình thức đơn thuần, mà là sự chuyển dịch sâu sắc các mối quan hệ nền tảng - học hỏi từ tư duy kiến trúc mở của Ryue Nishizawa để xóa bỏ ranh giới cố định giữa nội thất và ngoại thất, giữa cá nhân và tập thể.

Architecture is conventionally organised through a hierarchy of scales: the body, furniture, room, house, neighbourhood and city. Each scale is associated with its own spatial organisation, social relationships and forms of occupation. Yet everyday life constantly crosses these boundaries. The body occupies a room; the room belongs to a house; the house participates in an alley; the alley belongs to a neighbourhood; the neighbourhood forms part of the city.
Scalar Inversion begins from this condition. Rather than simply making something larger or smaller, the competition asks students to take the logic of one scale and make it operative at another. The fundamental operation is therefore not scaling the object, but scaling the relationship. Every scale contains a particular form of spatial intelligence. The body involves proximity, touch and movement; furniture organises support, orientation and encounter; rooms establish enclosure, thresholds and occupation; houses organise domestic rituals and degrees of privacy; neighbourhoods organise streets, territories and collective life; cities organise networks, infrastructure, flows and shared resources. Scalar Inversion asks what happens when the organisational intelligence of one of these scales is deliberately displaced into another. The physical dimensions may change, but the underlying relational structure is translated.
If a village is defined by individual territories, collective spaces, paths, encounters and shared resources, how could those relationships exist within furniture? If a neighbourhood is defined by streets, thresholds, courtyards, private territories and public spaces, how could these relationships operate within a room? If a city is defined by networks, infrastructure, density and collective resources, how could these principles organise a house?

GHẾ KẺ NGỒI

The kẻ ngồi belongs to the kẻ truyền, one of the characteristic structural systems of the traditional timber houses of Northern Vietnam. Unlike a simple beam, it works as part of a sequence: the kẻ chim, kẻ ngồi and kẻ hiên progressively transfer forces through the frame, connecting different levels of the structure and bringing the weight of the roof back toward the columns. The kẻ ngồi itself spans from the main column toward the secondary column, occupying the space between the primary structure and the roof.

But this structural system was never purely technical.
These members were often carefully proportioned and carved with vegetal or animal motifs. Structure became the place where craft, symbolism and construction converged. The kẻ ngồi was therefore both hidden infrastructure and visible culture.

The chair begins with this contradiction.
The fragment is extracted from a structural system that no longer exists and placed into another system entirely. It becomes the dominant element of an armchair, while the new MDF structure does something deliberately ordinary: it simply holds it in place.The hierarchy is reversed.

What was once secondary to the roof becomes primary to the object. What was once part of a collective structural system becomes an intimate surface for one body.

The xà lòng is a horizontal timber member embedded within the structural frame of the traditional Vietnamese house. Running between the main vertical members, it ties the columns together, stabilises the frame and helps distribute the forces of the roof through the wooden structure. Its role is less about carrying weight alone than about maintaining the coherence of the whole. It is, in a sense, a piece of architecture whose purpose is to keep things from becoming separate.

Today, when an old timber house is dismantled, the xà lòng can survive as a fragment after the system that gave it meaning has disappeared.

Bàn Xà Lòng responds to this rupture. The fragment is not restored, framed or exhibited. It is inserted into a new structure, where it again performs its fundamental operation: connecting two elements and making them behave as one. The legs become the columns. The tabletop becomes the new architectural field. The xà lòng becomes the hidden line that holds the new system together.

The historical fragment is deliberately combined with MDF and industrial components, the precious and the ordinary, the inherited and the disposable.

GHẾ CON RƯỜNG
The Section Turned Inside Out

A traditional timber house is a machine for keeping things above the body: the roof, the structure, the weather, the heat. The con rường belongs to this upper world, part of the hidden anatomy that makes protection possible.

The chair reverses this section. The con rường is extracted from the roof and brought down until architecture touches the body. What was once overhead becomes behind. What once protected through distance now supports through contact.

The transformation is therefore not simply a change of function. It is a change in the geometry of protection.The roof protected the body by standing between it and the outside world. The chair protects by following the body itself.

BÀN KẺ LỢN & ĐÔN DẠ TÀU
When structure is turned upside down

The kẻ lợn, once working in the roof structure, is inverted into the skeleton of a tea table. The dạ tàu, once belonging to the crafted upper world of the timber house, is brought down to become a stool.

The operation is not restoration of urban artifacts from massive urban destruction . It is scalar inversion Architecture changes when its parts are released from their assigned hierarchy: the roof structure becomes a table, ornament becomes furniture, structure becomes social infrastructure.

Then comes another inversion, the scale of the body.
The dimensions follow the Vietnamese sidewalk ritual: sitting low, drinking tea, leaning forward, talking, watching the street. A piece of domestic architecture is recalibrated to the posture of the city.

The traditional house is therefore not reconstructed. It is turned upside down and made to operate on the sidewalk.

When a beam no longer carries weights, it carries light.

In traditional Vietnamese timber architecture, the câu đầu is the main horizontal beam that locks the upper ends of the primary columns and completes the structural frame. Positioned above the inhabitants, it is simultaneously structure, spatial order and symbol. Often carved or inscribed with wishes for prosperity, longevity and family well-being, the beam carries not only the roof but also the aspirations of the household.

Đèn Câu Đầu takes this architectural condition out of the house and places it at the scale of furniture.

Under the massive urban transformation, thousand of traditional houses have been demolished. The salvaged beam no longer carries weights, it carries light.
Its structural necessity disappears, while its architectural position remains. Suspended above the body, it establishes a horizontal datum, defines an intimate field of space and creates a sense of enclosure without becoming a ceiling. What was once structural becomes atmospheric; what was once collective becomes intimate.

The project is therefore not a reproduction of a traditional element, but a transfer of architectural logic across scales.

This is the principle of scale inversion: using the logic of one scale to construct another. By changing scale, the original function is suspended, revealing the deeper spatial relationship embedded within the artifact.

Đèn Câu Đầu is part of The Village in the City in the House, a furniture collection by Hanoi Ad Hoc that explores the possibility of extending the life of Hanoi’s urban and architectural artifacts through transformation rather than preservation.

The collection does not seek to preserve heritage as an image. It asks how its spatial intelligence can survive by changing form. In this sense, Đèn Câu Đầu is a fragment of architecture that has escaped its original building. It carries the memory of a structural system into contemporary life—not as nostalgia, but as a new way of organising space.

We are honored to share that our work is featured in Domus No. 1114 (July–August 2026) in a six-page profile and interview by Matt Shaw, published as part of the special issue guest edited by Ma Yansong.

Entitled “New Times for Mending,” the article reflects on an architectural paradigm that moves beyond the modernist pursuit of tabula rasa and constant newness. Instead, it argues for architecture as an act of repair—of caring for what already exists, extending the life of buildings, landscapes, and communities, and creating new meanings through transformation rather than replacement.

The interview discusses how this philosophy resonates with the work of Ad Hoc Practice & Hanoi Ad Hoc, where architecture is understood as a vernacular and evolving spatial practice. Drawing from Hanoi’s culture of adaptation, rearrangement, and improvisation, our projects explore how existing structures, materials, and urban memories can be reconfigured into new forms of collective life.

The feature presents several recent works, including The Grid, Mold and Cast, House of Forest, and The Second Topography as different manifestations of this ongoing investigation into architecture as a practice of mending.

We are happy to share that Trung Mai will be giving a lecture as part of this year’s Wsie Warszawy program on June 23 in Warsaw.

The event takes place within the framework of the international Warsaw–Berlin student workshops and brings together students and researchers from the Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology and the Institute for Urban and Regional Planning at Technische Universität Berlin, creating a shared platform for exchange across disciplines and contexts.

The event opens this year’s edition of Wsie Warszawy with a discussion focused on an urban–rural perspective on the metropolis: The starting point for the discussion will be traces of old rural arrangements preserved in urban space - in the roads, property divisions, names of places and local identities. how traces of former villages continue to shape contemporary cities, and what historical spatial structures can teach us about future urban development. How to use knowledge about old villages to design solutions that serve residents today? And what can spatial layouts, practices and forms of organization that were created before its urbanization teach us about the future of the city?
