We are happy to share that Trung Mai will be giving a lecture as part of this year’s Wsie Warszawy program on June 23 in Warsaw.

The event takes place within the framework of the international Warsaw–Berlin student workshops and brings together students and researchers from the Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology and the Institute for Urban and Regional Planning at Technische Universität Berlin, creating a shared platform for exchange across disciplines and contexts.

The event opens this year’s edition of Wsie Warszawy with a discussion focused on an urban–rural perspective on the metropolis: The starting point for the discussion will be traces of old rural arrangements preserved in urban space - in the roads, property divisions, names of places and local identities. how traces of former villages continue to shape contemporary cities, and what historical spatial structures can teach us about future urban development. How to use knowledge about old villages to design solutions that serve residents today? And what can spatial layouts, practices and forms of organization that were created before its urbanization teach us about the future of the city?

Honored to participate as a speaker at the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 Barcelona, contributing to the session Economy of Means within the thematic framework of Becoming. Architectures for a Planet in Transition.

My contribution reflects on how architecture can emerge not from abundance, but from constraints, working with what already exists, extending the life of structures, materials, and cultural narratives. In a time when construction is often equated with extraction, the economy of means proposes another trajectory: one where intelligence replaces excess, care replaces consumption, and transformation begins with attentive observation of the resources already at hand. The session sits within the Congress’s Becoming Circular agenda, which examines architecture through processes of reuse, adaptation, and regenerative thinking.

Looking forward to joining colleagues, practitioners, and researchers in Barcelona to collectively imagine new forms of becoming.

Darine Choueiri is an architect-urbanist; she realized her studies at the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts in Lebanon, at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya and at the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid. She has worked in Spain at the studio of architect Manuel de Solà-Morales and landscape architect Miriam García García and in Equatorial Guinea in the coordination of urban projects. Since 2018, she is dedicated to independent research and is interested in stories embedded spatially. Her projects are based on independent and interdisciplinary research and seek to bring urban knowledge to a wider audience: of which her project “Sarajevo: Schooling under siege” (2022-2023) published in visionscarto.net, also in the magazines Mémoires en Jeu and On site review; and presented at the seminar: ‘The social experience of urban space in socialist cities of Eastern Europe’ at Ghent University. And her latest project, Campos escolares / Cuerpos viajeros is an urban research project developed through an artistic practice during a one-year art residency and maps the bus itineraries of students attending the open-air summer school in the greenhouses of Madrid at the beginning of the XXth century. Since august 2025 she is living in Hanoi.

Darine Choueiri là kiến trúc sư kiêm nhà quy hoạch đô thị. Cô theo học tại Học viện Mỹ thuật Liban (Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts) ở Liban, Đại học Bách khoa Catalunya (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) và Đại học Bách khoa Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid).

Cô từng làm việc tại Tây Ban Nha trong văn phòng của kiến trúc sư Manuel de Solà-Morales và kiến trúc sư cảnh quan Miriam García García, đồng thời tham gia điều phối các dự án quy hoạch đô thị tại Guinea Xích Đạo.

Từ năm 2018, cô tập trung vào nghiên cứu độc lập, với mối quan tâm đặc biệt đến những câu chuyện được lưu giữ và biểu hiện trong không gian. Các dự án của cô dựa trên phương pháp nghiên cứu độc lập và liên ngành, hướng tới việc đưa tri thức đô thị đến gần hơn với công chúng.

Một trong những dự án tiêu biểu của cô là “Sarajevo: Schooling under Siege” (2022–2023), được xuất bản trên nền tảng Visionscarto, đồng thời đăng tải trên các tạp chí Mémoires en Jeu và On Site Review. Dự án cũng được trình bày tại hội thảo “The Social Experience of Urban Space in Socialist Cities of Eastern Europe” (Trải nghiệm xã hội của không gian đô thị trong các thành phố xã hội chủ nghĩa Đông Âu) tại Đại học Ghent.

Dự án mới nhất của cô, “Campos escolares / Cuerpos viajeros”, là một nghiên cứu đô thị được phát triển thông qua thực hành nghệ thuật trong khuôn khổ chương trình lưu trú nghệ thuật kéo dài một năm. Dự án lập bản đồ các tuyến xe buýt của học sinh tham gia trường học mùa hè ngoài trời được tổ chức trong các nhà kính ở Madrid vào đầu thế kỷ XX.

Từ tháng 8 năm 2025, Darine Choueiri sinh sống và làm việc tại Hà Nội.

AD HOC WORKSHOP : THE VILLAGE IN THE — CITY — IN THE HOUSE

The hermit crab’s body serves as a metaphor for fragments of traditional objects; by molting countless times, it sets out in search of a new home. As Hanoi undergoes redevelopment, traditional objects which once served various functions such as carrying, decorating, and dividing have become obsolete, unused, and nearly forgotten. The workshop thus proposes to reimagine the former uses of these objects, giving them a new role within a different environment, a new place that will welcome them, that will allow each element to exist as an entity — not merely as decoration, but as constituent parts that will carry memory and history and endure over time, attempting to bring together fragments of memory that, rather than being a constraint, represent a potential for the future.

This participatory workshop brings together residents, urban planners, architects, students, and cultural historians. in a shared process of making and experimentation a platform for dialogue on urban heritage, mobility, and informal preservation practices, where the function and context of architectural elements are collectively reimagined through hands-on work with artifacts and materials.

AD HOC WORKSHOP : THE VILLAGE IN THE — CITY — IN THE HOUSE

Hanoi's urban villages hold traces of older social structures, spatial organizations, construction techniques, and cultural practices that coexist alongside ongoing processes of redevelopment, where traditional houses are increasingly altered, dismantled, or replaced. Their fragments are separated from what they once formed, now existing outside their original context.

The workshop takes these fragments as its starting point, in an effort of continuation, not conventional preservation. Memory is an active process, not only a record of the past. Architectural fragments become tools for reflection, reopening a discourse on what it means to connect to a place, a history, an identity. Through collection, documentation, and hands-on making, participants reinterpret these elements across scales, carrying their origins forward into new roles and daily rituals.

A participatory workshop bringing together residents, urban planners, architects, students, and cultural historians, a platform for dialogue on urban heritage and informal preservation. The floor plan is framed through the overlay of archival blueprints and narrative testimonies of typical mikrorayon and KTT revealing the similarities as well as the diversions through the immigrating process, allowing multiple temporal layers to coexist within a single spatial field. Through this superimposition, socialist dwelling is repositioned not as static infrastructure but as a archetype of continual transformation.
The Microrayon plans are collaged focusing on their kitchens which is the most fundamental feature of the mikroyaon’s apartment reflecting the utopian ideology of the socialist government on the gender role, productivity and new model of modernist living. Moving towards The middle part, it is collaged from the living spaces of a Microrayon Unit to a hallway of a KTT unit. It creates a series of narrow thresholds, tiny pockets and an elongated time-machine provoking a sense of nostalgia and retrospective of the immigrated community in an alien environment. The KTT’s plans are collaged focusing on their tiger-cages, often outside of a balcony or window. It is the extended space of the plans, signifying the adhocism of bottom-up Vietnamese life-style and tropicality.

The exhibition’s architecture is its discursive and analytical nucleus. Moving through the architectural construction—a multilayered superimposition, or collage, of several Soviet and Vietnamese apartment plans in 1:1 scale—viewers experience the transformation from one typology to another, from the Soviet mikrorayon apartment to the Vietnamese KTT. This spatial and conceptual hybrid does not merely juxtapose the two housing models, but reveals the processes of translation, appropriation, and adaptation that accompany the migration of socialist planning ideals across geographies and climates.
The mutation is neither representational nor symbolic, but tectonic and spatial. It emerges through calibrated shifts in scale, structural rhythm, material expression, and scenography programs. Visitors traverse a continuous transformation—from the rationalized, of the mikrorayon, shaped by industrialized construction and normative domesticity, toward narrow corridors and the layered, chaotic and improvised spatial logic of the KTT.
