WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO PROTECT THE FUTURE OF HOI AN AS A HERITAGE DESTINATION?

It means caring not only for its historic buildings, but also for the communities, rivers, farms and living landscapes that sustain the place.

Today, growing volumes of solid waste, food waste and single-use plastics are placing increasing pressure on these systems. But waste is not simply the result of careless behaviour. It is produced by products, services and operations designed around disposability.

Recycling has a role—but it cannot solve the problem alone.

We need to prevent unnecessary waste, redesign products and services, expand reuse and refill, and separate unavoidable food waste so that nutrients can return to soils and farms instead of generating methane in landfills.

This transition also needs people and infrastructure. Waste workers, farmers, residents and local enterprises are not simply beneficiaries; they are the operators and stewards who make local circular systems work. Tourism businesses, meanwhile, need credible pathways to turn sustainability commitments into daily operations.

Hoi An Eco-Hub helps connect these missing pieces. As a shared local platform, it brings together public authorities, tourism businesses and communities to support waste prevention, reuse and refill, resource recovery, local livelihoods, learning and landscape regeneration.

What’s inside Hoi An’s first community zero waste center?

Inside, there are waste workers being heard.
Not only collecting waste, but joining discussions, sharing field experience, and helping shape a system that works better for the people who handle waste every day.

Inside, there is a local community learning to see waste differently.
Residents are trained to sort waste at source, understand why clean and dry materials matter, and learn how waste can become a resource instead of pollution.

Inside, there is practical education on single-use plastic.
People learn how plastic affects health, the environment and local livelihoods — and what they can do to reduce unnecessary single-use items in daily life.

Inside, waste workers are trained in materials recovery.
They learn how to identify different material types, sort them correctly, reduce contamination, and improve the chance that recyclables can actually enter the recycling pathway.

Inside, the operation team is building professional capacity.
From source separation and collection schedules to data recording, storage, quality control and material flow, the team is learning how to manage waste as a local system — not just as an end-of-pipe problem.

Inside, residents bring clean, dry recyclables from home.
This small action changes the whole system: cleaner materials, safer work, better recovery, and stronger community participation.

Inside, people practice more sustainable consumption.
Through reuse, refill, zero waste market activities and community exchange, the Eco Hub helps people reduce waste before it is created.

Redesigning a Local Economy that Closes the Loop, Regenerating Land and People

Có một câu nói: "Nếu may mắn thì chúng ta chỉ gặp bác sĩ một vài lần trong đời. Nhưng chúng ta cần đến người nông dân ít nhất 3 lần một ngày."
Trong bối cảnh sản xuất nông nghiệp ngày càng phụ thuộc vào hóa chất và độc canh — khiến hệ sinh thái đất và sức khoẻ con người chịu tác động tích tụ theo từng vụ mùa; khi nền kinh tế quy mô toàn cầu đẩy thực phẩm đi rất xa trước khi đến bàn ăn, kéo theo phát thải còn đang trong tranh cãi xem ai chịu trách nhiệm; khi bao bì nhựa dùng một lần trở thành mặc định của chuỗi phân phối và để lại ô nhiễm vượt quá khả năng xử lý của cộng đồng địa phương — vai trò của một hệ thống thực phẩm từ nông trại tới bàn ăn ở quy mô địa phương không còn là lựa chọn thay thế. Nó là điều kiện tiên quyết để bảo vệ sức khoẻ của đất và người, và nền tảng của một tương lai sống-được.
Nhưng hiện tại, hệ thống đó chưa tồn tại như một tổng thể.
Người nông dân sinh thái có sản phẩm — nhưng khó tiếp cận thị trường trả đúng giá.
Doanh nghiệp du lịch có khách — nhưng không có chuỗi cung ứng minh bạch
Hệ thống tuần hoàn tài nguyên - Địa phương tạo ra hàng tấn rác hữu cơ mỗi ngày, nhưng phần lớn chưa quay trở lại nuôi dưỡng đất và sản xuất nông nghiệp.

Người tiêu dùng có ý thức và sẵn sàng chi trả — nhưng không có hệ thống giúp họ lựa chọn.

There is a saying:
"If we are fortunate, we may only need a doctor a few times in our lives. But we rely on farmers at least three times every day."
Today, however, the systems that feed us are increasingly disconnected from the health of the land.

Industrial agriculture has become heavily dependent on synthetic chemicals and monocultures, gradually degrading soil ecosystems while leaving long-term impacts on human health. Food often travels thousands of kilometres before reaching our tables, creating emissions whose responsibility remains widely debated. Meanwhile, single-use plastic packaging has become the default throughout supply chains, leaving local communities to deal with pollution far beyond their capacity to manage.
In this context, rebuilding local farm-to-table food systems is no longer an alternative. It is a prerequisite for protecting both healthy soils and healthy people, while creating the foundations for a future that remains liveable.
Yet such a system rarely exists as an integrated whole.
Ecological farmers produce high-quality food, but struggle to reach markets willing to pay fair prices.
Tourism businesses have visitors, but often lack transparent, local supply chains.
Communities generate tonnes of organic waste every day, yet most of it never returns to nourish agricultural soils.
Conscious consumers are willing to make better choices, but the systems that enable those choices are still missing.
These are all pieces of the same puzzle—still scattered apart.
Join us for an open conversation where ecological farmers themselves will share their stories, experiences, challenges and hopes for building a more regenerative local economy.

In Hoi An, people are going to market with sorted waste.
At the Hoi An Community Zero Waste Market, residents and visitors bring organic scraps, used cooking oil, coffee grounds, paper, cans and clean recyclables — and exchange them for local produce, seedlings, bio-cleaning products and other useful green goods.
But this is more than a “waste-for-products” activity.
The market is hosted at Hoi An Community Zero Waste Center, a community-based circular infrastructure developed by Hoi An Eco Hub, REED Regenerative, Green Youth Collective and Refillables D**g Day. It works as a hands-on learning site and decentralized Materials Recovery Facility, supporting source separation, composting, reuse and refill, recycling partnerships, youth education and community participation.
This is the missing middle of a zero waste destination: the practical space that connects households, small businesses, tourism actors, farmers, waste workers, local producers and visitors into one operating system.
For Hoi An, a heritage tourism destination facing the pressures of waste, climate change and rapid development, this model shows that circular economy is not only about managing materials. It is about building community capacity, supporting livelihoods, reducing landfill pressure and helping people see waste as a resource.
A small market can become a public classroom.
A community facility can become climate resilience infrastructure.
And tourism can become a way for visitors to learn from — and contribute to — the local systems that protect the places they love.

Ở Hội An, người dân đang đi chợ bằng rác đã phân loại.
Tại Chợ Cộng đồng Giảm Rác Hội An, người dân và du khách có thể mang rác hữu cơ, dầu ăn đã qua sử dụng, bã cà phê, giấy, lon và các loại rác tái chế sạch đến để đổi lấy nông sản địa phương, cây giống, dung dịch tẩy rửa sinh học và những sản phẩm xanh hữu ích.
Nhưng đây không chỉ là một hoạt động “đổi rác lấy quà”.
Phiên chợ được tổ chức tại Hoi An Community Zero Waste Center, một hạ tầng tuần hoàn dựa vào cộng đồng do Hoi An Eco Hub, REED Regenerative, Green Youth Collective, Refillables Đong Đầy cùng phát triển. Trung tâm hoạt động như một không gian học tập thực hành và một mô hình thu hồi tài nguyên phi tập trung, hỗ trợ phân loại rác tại nguồn, ủ phân hữu cơ, tái sử dụng, refill, kết nối tái chế, giáo dục thanh thiếu niên và thúc đẩy sự tham gia của cộng đồng.

Đây chính là “hạ tầng trung gian còn thiếu” của một điểm đến không rác thải: nơi kết nối hộ gia đình, cơ sở kinh doanh nhỏ, ngành du lịch, nông dân, người làm công tác thu gom, nhà sản xuất địa phương và du khách vào cùng một hệ thống vận hành thực tế.
Với Hội An — một điểm đến di sản đang đối mặt với áp lực rác thải, biến đổi khí hậu và phát triển nhanh — mô hình này cho thấy kinh tế tuần hoàn không chỉ là câu chuyện quản lý vật liệu. Đó còn là cách xây dựng năng lực cộng đồng, hỗ trợ sinh kế địa phương, giảm áp lực chôn lấp và giúp mọi người nhìn rác như một nguồn tài nguyên.
Một phiên chợ nhỏ có thể trở thành một lớp học cộng đồng.
Một trung tâm cộng đồng có thể trở thành hạ tầng thích ứng khí hậu.
Và du lịch có thể trở thành cách để du khách học hỏi, kết nối và đóng góp cho những hệ thống địa phương đang âm thầm bảo vệ nơi họ yêu mến.

Người dân và du khách tại Đà Nẵng mang rác đã phân loại đến “Chợ cộng đồng giảm rác”, đổi lấy nông sản và các sản phẩm thân thiện môi trường.
