RESTORATION WITH NATURE AND PEOPLE: THE GREEN YOUTH COLLECTIVE STORY.
A reflection on more than a decade of learning and contributing to the regeneration of the place we call home—Hoi An, Vietnam.

***
In the lower Thu Bon River floodplain, land and water have shaped people’s lives for generations.

Today, harsher droughts, unpredictable floods, riverbank erosion, urbanisation and changing land use are weakening the ability of riverside communities to adapt. These are systemic challenges. They cannot be addressed through short-term interventions alone.

For more than a decade, Green Youth Collective has worked alongside local communities to restore floodplain agro-ecosystems and strengthen the resilience of both land and people.

Our work connects organic waste recovery with soil health, climate-resilient plants, flood- and drought-adapted farming, circular economy initiatives and local capacity building. As a community-rooted intermediary, we bring together local knowledge, science, resources and stakeholders around real local needs.

The nature-based riverbank restoration work in Cẩm Phú village is one part of this journey.

We began with a simple question: can communities use locally available knowledge, materials and plant species to protect and restore their land?

Working with technical experts and local stakeholders, we combined bamboo bio-lock structures, ecological engineering and pioneer vegetation to stabilise the riverbank, retain soil and support biodiversity.

But the most important part is not the technique.

Restoration becomes meaningful when communities are co-creators, caretakers and long-term stewards. Community nurseries and pioneer planting systems can restore ecological functions, support livelihoods and enable local people to continue adapting the work over time.

Cẩm Phú reminds us that communities facing climate change are not only victims of environmental disruption. They can become leaders in restoring ecosystems and building adaptive livelihoods.

Regenerative development is not about stopping change. It is about restoring the living capacity of land and people—and rebuilding their relationship in a rapidly changing world.

Recap from Agroecology Tour 2026, hosted by Green Youth Collective.

Local circular economy begins with people who care for land.
At Farmers Talk in Hoi An, ecological farmers, women-led NGOs, community enterprises and regenerative tourism practitioners came together to share one question:
How can we build a local economy that keeps resources, knowledge and value circulating within the community?
From ecological farming transition to seed saving, from local produce to zero waste resource recovery, from women-led initiatives to shared meals — the conversation showed that circular economy is not only about materials.
It is also about relationships.
Farmers grow food.
Communities share knowledge.
Local enterprises recover resources.
Travellers experience natural food and communal living.
And the loop continues.
This is local circular economy in practice:
by people, for people, with nature.

🌿 CALL FOR PARTICIPATION | RIVERBANK STEWARDSHIP VOLUNTEER DAY

Early 2026, GYC and Cam Phu villagers piloted the nature-based land restoration along the riverbank where erosion takes place every year. A part of our 5-year journey in floodplain agro-ecosystem resilience building in the village.

After planting, pioneer plants must fight to survive severe heat, changing water conditions and human disturbance.

Join us on a stewardship day when we all learn how to continually care for the land and the people in the context of change.

We will:
🔸 Collect and prepare locally available bamboo materials
🔸 Make protective bundles from thorny bamboo branches
🔸 These bundles will wait until new plants are put on the ground, then we will place them around areas where pioneer plants need protection
🔸 Learn about nature-based agro-ecosystem restoration and community stewardship

These bamboo bundles are simple, locally appropriate solution designed to create protective boundaries, reduce trampling and give young trees more time to establish their roots, cover the soil and gradually restore riverbank vegetation.

📅 Date and time: 8AM - 4PM, Sunday 19th July 2026 (Community Lunch is provided - so register is required)
📍 Meeting point: Bến Phẩm restoration site, Cẩm Phú Village, Gò Nổi, Đà Nẵng (https://maps.app.goo.gl/fDR8F1R6ksBEoAEu9)

What to bring
– Comfortable, long-sleeved clothing suitable for outdoor work
– Closed shoes or boots
– Work gloves, if available
– A reusable water bottle
– A hat and sun protection
As we will be working with bamboo and thorny materials, all participants will be asked to follow the safety guidance and use appropriate protective equipment throughout the activity.

📩 Registration is required: Inbox us here or via WhatsApp number: 097 813 42 77

Each bamboo bundle creates a small protected space where riverbank plants have a better chance to survive.
More importantly, we are collectively testing a longer-term approach to riverbank care: not only planting trees, but also creating the conditions for them to survive, regenerate and gradually restore the ecological functions of the riverbank.
Join us to work with your hands, learn from the landscape and observe how an ecosystem can begin to recover through small but meaningful actions.

Organised by Green Youth Collective & Community-led Regenerative systems.

What’s inside Hoi An’s first community zero waste center?

Inside, there are waste workers being heard.
Not only collecting waste, but joining discussions, sharing field experience, and helping shape a system that works better for the people who handle waste every day.

Inside, there is a local community learning to see waste differently.
Residents are trained to sort waste at source, understand why clean and dry materials matter, and learn how waste can become a resource instead of pollution.

Inside, there is practical education on single-use plastic.
People learn how plastic affects health, the environment and local livelihoods — and what they can do to reduce unnecessary single-use items in daily life.

Inside, waste workers are trained in materials recovery.
They learn how to identify different material types, sort them correctly, reduce contamination, and improve the chance that recyclables can actually enter the recycling pathway.

Inside, the operation team is building professional capacity.
From source separation and collection schedules to data recording, storage, quality control and material flow, the team is learning how to manage waste as a local system — not just as an end-of-pipe problem.

Inside, residents bring clean, dry recyclables from home.
This small action changes the whole system: cleaner materials, safer work, better recovery, and stronger community participation.

Inside, people practice more sustainable consumption.
Through reuse, refill, zero waste market activities and community exchange, the Eco Hub helps people reduce waste before it is created.

So what’s inside Hoi An’s first community zero waste center?
Not only waste bins.
Inside are people, skills, conversations, local responsibility, and a community learning how to turn waste into resources.

CÙNG THIẾT KẾ LẠI MỘT HỆ THỐNG KINH TẾ ĐỊA PHƯƠNG: TUẦN HOÀN VÀ NUÔI DƯỠNG ĐẤT-NGƯỜI
Redesigning a Local Economy that Closes the Loop, Regenerating Land and People

- Anh Nguyễn Văn Nhân, Hợp tác xã Lúa di sản Hội An
- Chị Thái Mẫu, dự án Holy Seeds về giữ giống bản địa
- Anh Lê Quốc Long, trang trại 2Đăng farm

There is a saying:
"If we are fortunate, we may only need a doctor a few times in our lives. But we rely on farmers at least three times every day."
Today, however, the systems that feed us are increasingly disconnected from the health of the land.

Industrial agriculture has become heavily dependent on synthetic chemicals and monocultures, gradually degrading soil ecosystems while leaving long-term impacts on human health. Food often travels thousands of kilometres before reaching our tables, creating emissions whose responsibility remains widely debated. Meanwhile, single-use plastic packaging has become the default throughout supply chains, leaving local communities to deal with pollution far beyond their capacity to manage.
In this context, rebuilding local farm-to-table food systems is no longer an alternative. It is a prerequisite for protecting both healthy soils and healthy people, while creating the foundations for a future that remains liveable.
Yet such a system rarely exists as an integrated whole.
Ecological farmers produce high-quality food, but struggle to reach markets willing to pay fair prices.
Tourism businesses have visitors, but often lack transparent, local supply chains.
Communities generate tonnes of organic waste every day, yet most of it never returns to nourish agricultural soils.
Conscious consumers are willing to make better choices, but the systems that enable those choices are still missing.
These are all pieces of the same puzzle—still scattered apart.
Join us for an open conversation where ecological farmers themselves will share their stories, experiences, challenges and hopes for building a more regenerative local economy.
