The Paris Agreement, A Commitment to the Climate:

- The Paris Agreement is an international treaty on climate change that was signed in 2016.

- The treaty aims to help countries adapt to climate change effects, and mobilize enough finance. Under the agreement, each country must determine, plan, and regularly report on its contributions.

- However, there is debate about its effectiveness, with some environmentalists and analysts criticizing it for not being strict enough.

Typhoons and Tropical Cyclones, How Rising Sea Levels Worsen Them:

- Have you noticed that in recent years storms have been becoming more and more devastating? This is no coincidence; this is already considered a trend.

- In recent years, researchers have been quick to point out that with the warming of our oceans, storms have been able to pick up more energy, leading to higher wind speeds.

- Maximum wind speeds of hurricanes between 2019 and 2023 were boosted by an estimated 19mph (30km/h). This alongside the expanding of the ocean and the rising of tides mean that the effects of these storms will be worse and worse if this is not addressed.

- Climate change is very real people, and it is here.

Unexpected Sea Level Rise in 2024:

- 2024 has been statistically confirmed to be the warmest year on record. Sporting the highest global temperatures we have seen up until this point.

- Global temperatures in 2024 were 2.30 degrees Fahrenheit (1.28 degrees Celsius) above the agency’s 20th-century baseline (1951-1980), which tops the record set in 2023.

- The ocean began to warm faster than what was expected and causing the sea levels to rise higher as a result. According to a NASA-led analysis, last year’s rate of rise was 0.23 inches per year, compared to the expected rate of 0.17 inches per year.

- These stats gear up the following years to be dedicated into keeping our temperatures under control. It is nigh time for concrete action if we wish to keep 2024 as the warmest year on record.

Asian Coastal Cities Sinking due to Sea Levels:

- Sea levels and the increasing rise of them are affecting communities everywhere, be it human or animal. But, looking towards the future paints a grim picture for our coastal communities.

- Asia’s coastal cities are sinking and, by 2050, at least 3,300km of the region’s coastlines will be acutely vulnerable to the aggressive rise of the sea. Jakarta is sinking by as much as 25cm a year in some parts, due to the extraction of groundwater for daily use.

- Manila is subsiding at an annual rate of 10cm, and Bangkok, 1cm to 2cm. Cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Kolkata, Shanghai and Dhaka have all reached rates of more than 1cm a year.

- For these cities, it is time to act. Many developing sea walls in order to counter the adverse effects this phenomenon brings. Such as floods, storm surges, hurricanes and storms. It acts as a line of defense while we find ways in order to address the problem in its entirety.

Beluga Whales in Danger due to Melting Sea Ice:

- Beluga whales are majestic mammals that mostly live in the Arctic Ocean. They are very socialable and vocal whales that hunt, live and migrate in groups called pods. They are one of the three only whales able to live in the Arctic.

- With the warming of the Arctic, more and more orcas (better known as killer whales) have been hunting all three species of whale in the Arctic. The reduced sea ice leaves whales like the beluga vulnerable to major predators like the orca

- The melting sea ice affects nearly every aspect of their lives, from food availability to migration patterns to overall habitat quality. It also leaves beluga whales vulnerable to shipping traffic and noise pollution which greatly harm their communication ability.

Arctic Food Web Disrupted due to Glacial Melt:

- The Arctic food web is one of the most delicate ecosystems we have on the planet. Due to the extreme conditions of the Arctic Reigon, very little species are able to thrive in this habitat. Because of this, one shift in the habitat will result in the endangering of the species that call it home.

- In the Arctic, the ice is a deciding factor in the balance of the food web. Animals that rest on the ice like polar bears, walruses and seals rely on it to hunt and mate. While those under are the producers such as algae and phytoplankton, the sea ice keeps the population under control by limiting the amount of sunlight.

- But due to the effects of climate change, our glaciers around the world have been melting faster than they can grow. This causes issues to places like the Arctic, and none feel this change more than those that call the Arctic home.

- Because of the decrease in sea ice due to major climate change, there has been less and less space for animals above the ice to live. For those below the ice, we see an overpopulation and resulting in a major imbalance. Predators become vulnerable while producers are overabundant.

- Now, researchers and scientists work towards slowing down the rate the sea ice melts as many species may face endangerment and inevitable extinction if this problem is not addressed in the coming years.

The Biggest Threat to Rising Sea Levels:

- Also known affectionately as the “Doomsday Glacier”, Thwaites Glacier, located in West Antarctica, is one of the widest on Earth and is larger than the state of Florida.

- If this glacier were to fall into the ocean, a good chunk of Southern Florida would sink into the ocean as well. This retreat most likely started due to a very strong El Niño event as other glaciers around the area started retreating at the same time period.

- Researchers from THOR(Thwaites Offshore Research) analyzed the sediment and reconstructed where the ice was. They determined that the Doomsday Glacier began to significantly retreat in the 1940’s.

Polar Bears Starving as Ice Sheets Melt:

- The global melting of ice cause problems for everyone on this planet, everyone including the apex predators of the Arctic food chain.

- Polar bears eat at least 50 seals a year but because of the annual melting patterns of the sea ice, they can now only hunt from November to July.

- According to the World Wildlife Fund, polar bears spend more than 50% of their time hunting and are successful less than 2% of that time.

- As bears spend longer periods without food, their health declines. 4 out of 9 polar bears are actively starving, unable to reach the needed calorie intake.

Glacial Retreat, What it is, and How it Happens:

- Glacial Retreat is when the melting of glaciers outpaces the accumulation of snow and ice.

- When glaciers melt, a flow of fresh melt water runs through the glacier and out to the ocean, rising sea levels. Because of this, warm water flows into the glacier and often creates cracks and separates a chunk of ice leaving it to fall into the ocean.

- The main cause is of course, climate change. As the globe practically heats up and the seas turning into soup, the process of glacial retreat speeds up in return.

- This phenomenon worsens many of the problems climate change causes us including climate change itself. As the glaciers are responsible for storing water, acting as a reflective layer against sunlight and being an ecosystem for many animals and species.

- Only by slowing the rising temperatures may we find a solution to this major issue. Even today, researchers work to find ways to pivot towards a future where these icy monuments still stand tall.

Against the Rising Tides, Ice Week:

- One of the culprits of the rising sea level is the melting of ice at an alarming and global scale. This week is dedicated to the effects and causes of this phenomenon.

- With the warming globe, we must pay more attention to the looming threat that is the melting of glaciers and sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic regions of our beautiful Earth.

- Please join in on the spreading of information about what exactly our actions as humans are coming to. Maybe you may even feel compelled to voice the concerns of many on the issue that is our rising tides.

- May God bless us all.
