Economy & Environment Partnership for Southeast Asia The Economy and Environment Partnership for Southeast Asia (EEPSEA) has developed from the Economy and Environment Program for Southeast Asia

The Economy and Environment Partnership for Southeast Asia (EEPSEA Partnership) has developed from the Economy and Environment Program for Southeast Asia (EEPSEA Program). The EEPSEA Program was founded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) with co-funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)

in May 1993. On November 2012, it was devolved to WorldFish, a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Consortium. During its 23 years of operation, the EEPSEA Program supported training and research in environmental and resource economics with the goal of strengthening local capacity in the economic analysis of environmental issues so that researchers can provide sound advice to policymakers. This is the same tradition that the EEPSEA Partnership aims to uphold. Established in April 2015, the Partnership serves as a regional platform for transdisciplinary research to address global environmental challenges. It has grown into a network of Economy & Environment national organizations or institutes in several countries in the region. The EEPSEA Partnership expands its predecessorโ€™s work by conducting transdisciplinary research that give the environment its due value as well as by providing training courses on the use of economic tools and techniques in analyzing environmental issues.

We are happy to share with you a recent study on Circular Economy and its Implementations in Southeast Asia.

Kamaludin, M., Azlina, A.A., Ghani, A.N.A., Samdin, Z. (2025). Closing the Loop: How Energy Efficiency Labeling Supports Circular Economy Goals. In: Heshmati, A., Nam, P.K. (eds) Circular Economy and its Implementations in Southeast Asia. Frontiers in South and Southeast Asian Development Research. Springer, Singapore. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-981-96-0539-2_8

Energy labels serve as a crucial tool for educating consumers on the energy efficiency of appliances. These labels enable consumers to make wise decisions that save money and reduce their carbon footprint by providing precise information on energy consumption, while energy-efficient appliances promote sustainability by reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and conserving resources. By conserving natural resources by minimizing resource extraction and waste generation, the circular economy promotes sustainable development for future generations. This study observes Malaysian public awareness and knowledge of energy-efficient labeling and its acceptance of energy-labeled appliances. The study collected primary data from 791 participants in selected states of Malaysia. About 74.97% of people are willing to pay more for energy-efficient appliances to support sustainability. The study found that age, employment status, and environmental awareness are important factors that drive the public to spend more on energy-labeled appliances. Energy labels provide information about energy consumption and the environmental impact of products, thus supporting the circular economy. Recognition of their relevance by policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the public is crucial. Besides, the energy labels play a vital role in accomplishing SDG 7, โ€œAffordable and Clean Energy.โ€
