Our Story

We are ending poverty with gender equality. We Effect see women’s empowerment as the key to our goal: a sustainable and just world, free of poverty. That means working with both women and men to close the gender gap. Every year, we partner with hundreds of thousands of people in Asia to promote equal opportunities to be a leader, to farm and to own land, and to earn and save money. We have set a goal that at least half of our resources shall go to women, and that 50 percent of all leaders should be women in the organisations we work together with. That is what we mean by #EqualityFirst. We Effect is committed to end poverty in six countries in Asia: Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Palestine, and the Philippines. We work where we are needed most, in poor, and mainly rural communities. We empower people to raise their voices and defend their rights, and to protect themselves from the effects of climate change. Founded 1958 by the Swedish cooperative movement, we know that success comes from working together. We work to strengthen thousands of savings and loans groups, cooperatives and other member based organisations. We view women and men, girls and boys, as holders of rights, not passive recipients of help. All our work is developed in dialogue with our partner organisations, contributing to sustainable development powered by people who themselves live in poverty That is why we call ourselves #WeEffect.
