Last Thursday, CanCham Vietnam members had the pleasure of joining a roundtable with the Saskatchewan Trade & Invest delegation to exchange ideas and explore opportunities between Saskatchewan and Vietnam.

We had a great conversation about Vietnam’s recent economic growth and development, while gaining insights into Saskatchewan’s strengths and the opportunities emerging across both markets.

What stood out was how much potential there is for the two sides to complement each other. Saskatchewan has a strong global reputation for food, fuel, fertilizer, and critical minerals, along with expertise across agriculture, mining, energy, manufacturing, and forestry. At the same time, Vietnam’s growing digital economy, infrastructure, innovation, manufacturing, and technology sectors, along with its deeper integration into global supply chains, are creating new opportunities for trade and investment.

Our member, C+ Consult, represented by Colin Ng, Managing Director, was recently featured in Vietnam Investment Review (VIR), sharing his perspectives on Vietnam's evolving FDI strategy and the country's next phase of investment-driven growth.

In the interview, Colin advocates for a shift from an input-based incentive model - focused on capital investment and employment targets - to a performance-based approach that rewards measurable outcomes such as technology transfer, innovation, R&D, productivity improvements, environmental sustainability, and stronger linkages with local enterprises.

He also notes that while Vietnam has successfully attracted significant FDI over the past decades, the next stage of development should prioritize high-quality investment over volume. This includes strengthening human capital through workforce upskilling, investing in modern infrastructure and digital transformation, developing supporting industries, and improving policy consistency and transparency to create a more competitive and predictable business environment.

Colin further emphasizes that sustainable FDI success will depend on close collaboration between the government, businesses, educational institutions, and local suppliers to build a resilient innovation ecosystem that delivers long-term value for both investors and Vietnam's economy.
