WHEN A RIVER BECOMES PART OF MEMORY

“I wonder if the water keeps the days and months,
Keeps all the memories carried by its flow?
O river that has bathed my whole life!
I will forever cherish this love, ever new.”
(Tế Hanh)

A river does not simply flow through a landscape. It flows through the memories of those who have lived beside it. A river may begin in a distant place, pass through many lands, and quietly find its way into people’s lives. It appears in riverside piers, ferry crossings, markets by the water; in afternoons when children swim in the river, voices calling from one bank to the other, or stories grandparents tell about their hometown. These seemingly ordinary moments, with time, become memories. And when a river has been present in the life of a community for long enough, it becomes more than a body of water. It becomes part of the culture, history, and identity of the place.

For Hanoi, rivers have long played a role far greater than that of trade and the economy. Historian Professor Trần Quốc Vượng once described ancient Thăng Long as being surrounded by a “quadrilateral of water,” with the Red River, Tô Lịch River, and Kim Ngưu River, and Thiên Phù river forming a network deeply connected to the life of the imperial capital. The Red River curved from the north toward the east of the citadel; the Tô Lịch was a distributary of the Red River, connecting the eastern and western parts of the city and flowing along its western side. Meanwhile, the Kim Ngưu, a branch of the Tô Lịch, ran through the south (Nhan Dan, 2025). At a time when roads were limited, waterways served as vital routes for transportation and trade. Goods were brought into the imperial capital and then moved onward along the river network. The rivers were not simply outside the city—they were part of what enabled the city to function and grow.

But rivers carried another kind of flow: a flow of culture and spirituality. The Tô Lịch River once held a special place in the spiritual life of Thăng Long, closely associated with the image of “Nùng Mountain – Tô River” and the saying, “Nùng Sơn chính khí – Tô Lịch giang thần.” Along the rivers, resting piers became places where local people, merchants, and soldiers stopped along their journeys. Temples, festivals, and spiritual practices emerged around these waterways and were passed down through generations. Carried by the current were not only people and goods, but also stories, beliefs, and memories of a place.

Many of these stories still live on in spaces along the rivers today. The legend of Chử Đồng Tử and Tiên Dung is associated with the Tự Nhiên riverbank and Dạ Trạch lagoon along the Red River; Đa Hòa Temple and the Chử Đồng Tử–Tiên Dung Festival continue to preserve and retell the story. Along the Red River, the memory of Hưng Đạo Đại Vương Trần Quốc Tuấn is also preserved through a network of temples stretching from the delta to Lào Cai, including Đền Thượng, Đền Cấm, Đền Quan, and Đền Vạn Hòa. From a riverside pier to a temple, from a folk legend to a festival, the river becomes a place where memory can take root.
But when a river changes, where do the memories attached to it go?

A riverside pier disappears. A ferry no longer crosses. A market by the water transforms. A story is remembered only by an older generation. Such changes can gradually weaken the connection between a river and the life of a community. Because a river is not preserved simply by keeping its waters flowing; it truly lives when people continue to remember it, tell its stories, and find a part of themselves within it.

To look back at Hanoi’s rivers, therefore, is not simply to look into the past. It is a way of understanding what these rivers have carried, what is slowly disappearing, and what we want the relationship between the city and its rivers to become in the future.

Together with Ecoquity, let us continue this journey of looking back at Hanoi’s rivers—not only to remember what once existed, but also to find ways to write the next chapter of their stories.

RIVER: A GIFT TO THE LAND

If one day the river disappeared, what would disappear with it?

From silt to harvests.
Every river carries a story of the land. As rivers flow, they transport silt, enrich the land along their banks, and create fertile plains. For farmers, this provides the essential conditions for planting, harvesting, and sustaining their livelihoods season after season.
From silt, people gain land to cultivate.
From fertile soil, people gain food.
And from the basic need to survive, the first settlements gradually emerge.

From riverbanks to communities.
When people settle, a land begins to come alive. Families gather to form villages. Riverbanks become places of encounter. Riverside markets emerge, where crops, goods, and stories from different places are exchanged. Some come to the river to collect water, some to fish, while others transport goods downstream. These seemingly ordinary activities gradually form a network of livelihoods and social connections, bringing people together and connecting them to the river that sustains them.

From trade to cities.
Long before highways connected cities, rivers served as natural routes of transportation. Waterways opened paths. These paths connected communities. And these connections fostered exchange, trade, and the growth of settlements. It is no coincidence that many of the world’s great cities have developed along rivers. London has the Thames. Paris has the Seine. Cairo is closely tied to the Nile. And Hanoi, too, was shaped within a landscape where rivers have played a profound role in the city’s historical development.

BUT A LAND IS NURTURED BY MORE THAN ITS SOIL

Over hundreds, even thousands, of years, a river gradually becomes more than a natural resource. It becomes part of a community’s collective memory, embedded in place names and stories passed down from one generation to another. Riverbanks, alluvial plains, boats, and seasonal floods become part of the cultural and spiritual life of the communities that grow alongside them. Perhaps, then, when we look at a river, we should not only ask:

How much does this river give to people?
We should also ask: How many layers of human life have been shaped around this river? And as cities continue to expand, this relationship gradually changes. Rivers that once drew people toward them for living, trading, and connecting can become narrowed, polluted, or pushed out of everyday urban life.

The rivers of Hanoi carry this story too. Once an inseparable part of everyday life and the city’s development, these rivers have witnessed the city grow and transform across generations. Yet, with rapid urbanization, these waterways have gradually become narrower, more polluted, and increasingly disconnected from people’s everyday lives.

Perhaps, to understand why we need to restore a river, we must first remember that a river has never been merely a body of water. It can nourish the land, sustain communities, open pathways for trade, and contribute to the making of a city.

And therefore, when a river is damaged, what is lost is not only an ecosystem. It may also mean losing a part of our collective memory, culture, and connection to the very land we call home. 🌱

Join Ecoquity as we begin a journey to revisit Hanoi’s rivers through three dimensions Past - Present - Future. Because a river can nurture a land. But how we choose to treat that river will shape how that land grows.🌊🍃

WHERE DID OUR ANCESTORS' CUSTOM OF SETTLING ALONG THE RIVERS ORIGINATE? 🛖Modern cities teach us to perceive a river thro...
24/08/2026

WHERE DID OUR ANCESTORS' CUSTOM OF SETTLING ALONG THE RIVERS ORIGINATE? 🛖

Modern cities teach us to perceive a river through the lens of rigid boundaries: concrete embankments that draw a clear line between "urban land", "drainage channels", and distant vantage points from which humans merely observe the water. 🏘️

Yet, tracing back through the cultural strata of Vietnam, our ancestral settlements never began with such separation. 🪴

When did our ancestors first build their homes along the waterways, and what made rivers an inseparable lifeblood of the Red River civilization? ⛰️

1️⃣The primordial source of livelihood and trade

Long before modern avenues and highways emerged, the river network served as the original transit system of the land. Rooted in wet-rice civilization, the practice of establishing villages and hamlets along riverbanks and dikes stemmed from the most fundamental needs of daily subsistence:

- Alluvial nourishment and cultivation: Each flood season not only brought fresh water to irrigate the fields but also deposited invaluable layers of fertile silt - the very foundation that sustained the bountiful harvests of the Northern Delta.
- Trade and connectivity: "Near the market first, near the river second" (Nhất cận thị, nhị cận giang). Rivers served as vital corridors connecting communities, shaping bustling wharves and riverfront hubs where over 30 traditional craft villages converged, facilitating vibrant commerce for centuries.
- Domestic water and life sustenance: From daily chores like washing clothes and gathering water at the communal wharf to catching fresh fish to sustain households, river waters were woven into the rhythm of everyday life.

2️⃣Living in symbiosis rather than imposing upon nature

There lies a profound distinction between merely settling beside a body of water and genuinely living in symbiosis with a flowing river. Our ancestors did not seek to tame or impose artificial control over the waterways. Instead, traditional rural architecture and daily life adapted gracefully to the river’s natural pulse:

- Villages were oriented toward the river to catch the cool summer breezes and embrace the circulating vital energy.
- Homes on stilts along the dikes adapted flexibly to seasonal tidal changes and storm floods.
- The river wharves functioned as the earliest public spaces - where children learned to swim, where elders gathered to converse after a hard day’s work in the fields, and where collective memories were forged across generations. In those days, the river was regarded as a living entity, an intimate companion witnessing the full life cycle of human existence, rather than a mere "waste basin" or an engineering challenge awaiting technical intervention.

3️⃣Ecological fractures in urban development

Under rapid urbanization, natural water flows have gradually narrowed, been diverted, or buried beneath modern infrastructure. We have gradually turned our backs on the rivers. Stripped of their natural ecological exchange, waterways have devolved into constricted, polluted drainage channels amidst the dense urban fabric.
Yet, deep within the urban identity of Hanoi - a city literally born within the bends of its rivers (Hà - Nội: "inside the rivers") - the intrinsic need to reconnect with nature and water remains an indelible human instinct.

How can we move beyond mere nostalgia for a serene river of the past and truly restore a harmonious relationship among humanity, nature, and modern urban living spaces? 🌻

Join Ecoquity on our journey to uncover historical archives, engage directly with field realities, and seek sustainable pathways for the future of the capital's urban rivers. 🍃

NẾP DỰNG NHÀ VEN SÔNG CỦA TỔ TIÊN TA TỪ ĐÂU MÀ CÓ? 🛖

Cùng Ecoquity bắt đầu hành trình lật mở từng trang tư liệu lịch sử, chạm vào hiện trạng thực địa và tìm kiếm lời giải cho tương lai của những dòng sông thủ đô. 🍃

With only two years old, Ecoquity is proud to be the first Sustainability Club at VinUniversity, contributing and enacting a sustainability mindset and practices for VinUniversity students, faculty, staff, and beyond, paving the way for a sustainable campus. Throughout this year, we brought that commitment through notable projects, including:

For the VinUni community: Our VinUni-wide work centered on education and collaborative action. After 1.5 years of examining international case studies, conducting surveys and in-depth interviews, and holding faculty panel consultations, we launched the "Educate for Tomorrow" Research Report reflecting students' learning experiences and expectations of VinUni students on integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into the higher education curriculum, with support from VinUni leaders, research center, and departments. We also brought sustainability into practice: the "Nature-based Solutions in Urban Areas" workshop, co-hosted with YUSEA to give a hands-on exploration of urban environmental challenges through the NBS Fresk board game. Our Campus Cleanup, organized in collaboration with the Sustainability Committee and Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, and our Waste Audit with CSD, transformed sustainability values into direct, visible action on campus.

For the wider university community in Hanoi: Through our Open Learning Series ( #1 and #2), with Sustainability 101 on climate change through Climate Fresk, and Circular Economy on sustainable consumption and the 5Rs, we opened our learning spaces to students beyond VinUni. Co-organizing with Peer Support Group, our Mental Health Weekend project brought a workshop and a day trip to Ba Vi National Park, connecting sustainability with practical intrapersonal wellbeing. Together, these two series reached more than 100 participants from across Hanoi.

For Ecoquity community: We have organized different internal events, from Secret Santa, Movie Screening Nights, to volunteering to pack flood aid for Phú Yên and together joining Vietnam Conference of Youth 2025. These initiatives are how we build a space where individuals who care about sustainability can find each other, stay, and grow together. In the near future, we will keep on developing and implementing projects that manifest sustainability through our four activity pillars: Campus, Culture, Community and Curriculum at VinUniversity. And in a broader lens, we will keep building and sustaining a community of young sustainability advocates and practitioners, contributing to the VinUni Vision 2030 and beyond.
