Our Big Idea

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) seeded the idea for the Mekong Business Initiative (MBI) in 2013. ADB recognized that countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) were strategizing through pursuing private-sector growth. The region has strong economic linkages, but still faces obstacles. The solution seemed to lie in a more inclusive model for economic growth and coordinated private sector development.

The Government of Australia’s interest in private sector development in the region, led to the establishment of The Mekong Business Initiative.

Since its inception in 2015, MBI’s mission focuses in three key areas of private sector development: Business Advocacy, Access to Finance, and Support for Innovation. The project has spawned business information centers, unique business to business forums, start-up associations, productive public private sector dialogue, and 5 successful innovation challenges.
