: FOUR LITTLE REASONS TO SMILE

This week brought good news for four turtles and tortoises in Vietnam. πŸ’πŸ’š

After receiving reports from members of the public, ENV helped coordinate the transfer of four turtles and tortoises in Dien Bien and Hanoi. Two were released back into the wild, while two others were transferred to appropriate facilities for care.

Each animal's journey was different, but we're happy that all four had a positive outcome.

🌿 Wishing everyone a relaxing weekend ahead. As for our shelled friends, we hope they're enjoying life at their own pace - slow and steady.

Two captive bears from P**c Tho Commune, Hanoi, have recently been voluntarily transferred to a wildlife rescue center.

The transfer of these two bears is another encouraging sign that bear farming in P**c Tho can be brought to an end. However, dozens of bears remain in captivity in the commune.

🐦 86 BIRDS RETURN TO THE WILD

After documenting hundreds of Facebook posts advertising wild birds for sale, ENV reported the case to authorities.

The case led to the confiscation of 86 Red-whiskered Bulbuls from a wildlife trader in Khanh Hoa Province. The birds were released back into the wild, and the individual was fined 7.5 million VND (approximately $290 USD) for the violations.

86 birds returned to the wild, a wildlife trader fined, and hundreds of wildlife sale posts removed - another encouraging outcome in ENV's ongoing fight against wildlife trafficking. 🌿

🐻 STILL WAITING FOR A CHANCE

Across Vietnam, some bears have spent decades in small cages on bear farms.

Many suffer from chronic health problems associated with long-term captivity, including poor mobility, skin conditions, and psychological distress. For years, their world has been limited to concrete floors and metal bars.

Yet some are still waiting for a different future.

Every bear deserves the chance to live free from exploitation and experience a more natural environment.

As Vietnam moves closer to ending bear farming, there are still bears counting on that chance.

πŸŽ‰ 23 PROVINCES AND COUNTING

ENV welcomes the news that Thai Nguyen has officially become the 23rd province in Vietnam to end bear farming, following the successful transfer of the province's last captive bear to a rescue center at Bach Ma National Park.

This milestone is another encouraging sign that the end of bear farming in Vietnam is within reach.

Yet important work remains. Nearly half of Vietnam's remaining captive bears are still being held in Hanoi, making the capital the country's largest remaining bear farming hotspot.

πŸ“± SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT A SAFE HAVEN FOR WILDLIFE TRADE

After documenting multiple Facebook posts advertising wild birds, including raptors, ENV quickly reported the case to authorities in Phu Tho Province. Authorities later verified the subject's identity and issued an administrative fine of 16.25 million VND (approximately $620 USD) for illegally advertising wildlife online.

As wildlife traffickers increasingly turn to social media, monitoring and reporting online violations has become more important than ever.

ENV remains committed to identifying wildlife crime online and reducing opportunities for illegal wildlife trade across Vietnam. 🌿

A SAFER SKY FOR WILD BIRDS

On May 26, after receiving a report from a ENV's volunteer about a bird trapping net set up in a field in southern Vietnam, ENV quickly relayed the information to local authorities.

The site was inspected the following day, and the net was confiscated and destroyed, helping prevent further harm to wild birds.

Bird trapping remains a significant threat to wild bird populations across Vietnam, affecting both migratory and resident species.

ENV continues working to help keep wild birds in the sky - where they belong. 🌿
