Here us out: They have the power to create entirely new worlds, limited only by their imagination and the power of their rendering software. If nothing else, they can conjure events that would never occur in our world. Ghosts, wizards, and the idea of Adam Sandler repeatedly romancing Drew Barrymore all get brought to life on the big screen.

So why is that so often, when you watch a movie based on a true story, you go, “No way, they must have made that part up,” only to pull up the Wikipedia page and find out that not only did it happen, it was way more intense in real life? It turns out that our universe can bring about circumstances that even the most artistic visionary could never dream of. I love facts. Not the “this animal runs fast” kind, those are just trivia wearing a lab coat. I’m talking about the kind that make you stop mid-scroll and think, “nope, I don’t like that.”

The kind that makes you look into the middle distance and have a quiet little mental breakdown.

Specifically, facts about your brain. The thing you trust more than anything else. The thing that tells you what’s real, what’s happening, and who you are.

The only thing in the universe that named itself.

Here’s the problem. It’s not nearly as reliable as you think.

Your brain is constantly cutting corners, filling in gaps, and straight-up lying to you just to keep things running smoothly. Not in a dramatic, evil way, more like a tired office worker trying to hit a deadline. “Close enough, ship it.”

And it works. It works so well that you never notice any of it.

Until someone points it out.

Which is exactly what we’re about to do.
