SOLUTIONS FOR REGIONAL DISCRIMINATION

1. Education:
Long term maintenance solution. This included schooling and family education. These are the factors that directly affect people's awareness.

2. Propaganda:
Propaganda through social media will be easier to approach everyone. This might encourage people to understand each other’s differences.

3. Reported:
There is nothing to be scared of. The victims of discrimination have their rights, should be encourage and support so that the victim can sue (for example, under the Criminal Code, offences against religion and regional discrimination can be fined depending on the severity)

4. Regulations:
In some places, like schools and the workplace, there are often many discrimination problems. Regulations preventing discrimination can be executed.

5. Other:

CONSEQUENCES OF REGIONAL DISCRIMINATION

When talking about such issues, the common perspective is that problems only have some small effects on the victims. Actually, it is different when it happens in reality.

As people are bullied by some discriminating ways such as jokes about the backgrounds, identities of different regions or just jokes about the accents or dialect. These situations happen frequently in Hanoi, especially among some groups of toxic people. As a result, caused significant consequences of provincial discrimination:

- Causing disunity among civilians in a country

- Creating social chaos and regional discrimination group

- Boycotting and bullying the provincial, causing mental illnesses, anxiety and depression among these people.

- Unfair treatment in different facets: job opportunities, salaries and wages, etc.

CAUSES OF REGIONAL DISCRIMINATION

1. Lack of education among people
In most cases, children at young ages can’t distinguish the right and the wrong, so they would believe in what they witness the most, which, in this case, is discrimination against provincial people.

2. Discrimination-based environment
People who grew up in a discrimination-based environment would consider that discrimination towards provincial people is conventional.

3. Prejudices & stereotypes from the past.
Wars caused conflicts and hatred among communities, up until the present day some people, typically the elders are still affected by those mindsets.

4. Assumptions from bad characteristics of provincial people.
People pick out the most common, yet negative traits to create the assumption for the whole.

5. Others

WHAT IS REGIONAL DISCRIMINATION?

REGIONAL DISCRIMINATION
Regional discrimination is the contempt towards provincial people, specifically people whose origin is in provinces/cities other than Hanoi. This issue is mostly caused by all the stereotypes and prejudices that Hanoian gave them based on their common-bad characteristics of the region that they came from, leading to an increase of regional discrimination rate. As a result, the image of Hanoian in provincial people's mind has also been imprinted by the traits of elitist, egotist and bragger, which even worsen the hatred among the community.

EXAMPLES
Driving around the central of Hanoi with the license plate registered outside of Hanoi, certain common hate speech might happen like: “Me bon tinh le” (God damn it, the provincial), “Lai la bon tinh le lai xe'' (The provincial driving, again?).

Another common frequent discrimination is due to the dialect that sounds different from the Hanoian accent. Most of the time, Hanoians would make fun of others if they talk or sound different.

MAGI PROJECT PROPOSAL

Initial starting point:
MAGI project was created for the purpose of raising people’s awareness on regional discrimination in Hanoi, Vietnam with the hopes of tackling the issue.

Regional discrimination in Hanoi:
Discrimination and prejudices against provincial people living in Hanoi happens on a daily basis. Our topic is culture, tradition and identity. We have aimed to raise people’s awareness about the situation of discriminating and stereotyping provincial people.

MAGI:
MAGI project encourages everyone to play their part in our preventing regional discrimination campaign. The only way we succeed is when the change comes from within, and we want to empower you to take an active role. Learn deeper about the issue to lend your support!
