🚀 The SIMPLE VR Contest is officially LAUNCHED in Phnom Penh!

On September 3, we gathered at the Cambodia Academy of Digital Technology (CADT) in Phnom Penh — together with 220 guests, including Cambodia's Minister of Post and Telecommunications, the Ambassador of the EU to Cambodia, the Ambassador of France to Cambodia, and university students ready to build the future of their country.

The participants didn't just hear about VR used to raise awareness to sustainability issues, but got to experience a live demo of CropGuards, showcasing a rice field ecosystem and its trophic network, built under the SIMPLE Project 🌾🕶️

From welcome remarks to a full contest briefing for students and lecturers, this launched a region-wide movement to have ASEAN's next generation reflect on solutions to sustainability issues and become digital innovators.

Got a message to tell about sustainability? We're giving university students and young professionals across ASEAN the tools to build it in virtual reality.

The SIMPLE VR Contest is inviting applicants across ASEAN to design and develop original VR experiences that address sustainability topics in a fun, creative and impactful way using the tools and resources provided by SIMPLE.

Who can join?
✅ University students & young professionals
✅ From any of the 11 ASEAN nations
✅ Teams of 3–5 participants + 1 professor/mentor
✅ 100% free to register

What's in it for you?
🎓 The selected teams will be invited to a fully funded training session in Hanoi at ACROSS Lab

🕶️ How can students truly feel climate change?

They can read about it, write about it, hear about it, watch it, but what about stepping into it?

This is where we bring you the four Virtual Universes (VUs) developed under the framework of SIMPLE, built using real scientific models, now running in classrooms across the Lower Mekong region.

🇻🇳Vietnam: In AquaDefenders, students study the relationship between saltwater intrusion, groundwater extraction and land subsidence in deltas.

🇹🇭Thailand: In BiodiVRestorer, students learn about forest restoration by collecting seeds and using them to restore a balanced ecosystem.

🇰🇭Cambodia: In CropGuards, students discover the biodiversity of rice fields and understand the impacts of insects on rice cultivation.

🇱🇦Lao PDR: In AEDES (Action & Education for Dengue Elimination Strategies), students discover the life-cycle of mosquitoes and how to prevent dengue outbreaks.

More VUs are already in development, and this September, SIMPLE wishes to bring even more topics to life through the VR contest and your suggestions!

That's the thought process behind 𝗦𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘 (Sustainability Issues Multiverse for building Participatory Learning Environments).

Co-funded by the European Union under the EU-ASEAN Green Partnerships Programme, led by IRD, and implemented together with CTU, NSTDA, CADT, and BeDev, SIMPLE is bringing virtual reality into classrooms across Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Lao PDR.

We have designed, so far, six science-based virtual universes addressing challenges like biodiversity, salt intrusion, epidemiology, or agroecological crop protection with the support of experts, teachers, and students.

That's not our final stops 🚀 From program launched directly in educational settings across the Mekong region to numerous VR demos and training opportunities, SIMPLE is growing a community of young changemakers across ASEAN.

🌎🏫 Techfest Hai Phong 2026 – the SIMPLE project Brought a One-of-a-Kind VR Experience!

On 4th and 5th August 2026, the event provided an opportunity for the team to introduce two VR activities - ÉVEIL and Hà Nội 1926 to hundreds of visitors at Techfest Hai Phong 2026.

From young children and students to local business owners and international guests - everyone who stopped by was filled with curiosity and excitement as they put on the VR headsets and stepped into a whole new world!

😍 Our BiodiVRestorer VR Game received a lot of feedback from educators in Thailand!
On 23rd July 2026, BiodiVRestorer, an immersive learning session developed within the SIMPLE Project, was showcased by the BioTec team from the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) at the 25th National Conference on Science and Mathematics Education in Schools (SMT 25).
Many educators expressed strong interest in adopting BiodiVRestorer within their own institutions and requested further communication with the NSTDA research team to explore future collaborations.

🧐 Zero Waste - Zero Boredom with our VR Game

🌎 About Opération Zéro Déchet – Zero Waste Operation

The OZD VR game was developed under the ÉVEIL project, which combines scientific discovery and French language learning through an immersive virtual reality module titled Opération Zéro Déchet. In the game, students are immersed in a fictional village where they interact with local inhabitants, observe the consequences of pollution, and take part in waste collection and sorting activities, encouraging both environmental awareness and active learning 🥐🇫🇷
