Carolina Corral

Carolina Corral Guided horseback rides along the Coral Bay shoreline. The donkeys of St. John have played a major role in building the infrastructure of this island.

Visit with rescued & adopted island horses, donkeys, goats, sheep, chickens, cats & dogs at the only large animal rescue on island. The wild ones may come to your car for a treat, but PLEASE don't give them anything. They are fine roaming free and cannot handle human food. Besides it draws them into the roads where they might accidentally get hit. It is rumored they unexpectedly kick, but this is

not the case. By nature they wish to keep to themselves and don't want to start something where every action generates a reaction. I've been in a stall with four wild donkeys before and none of them acted out. Most are very mellow willing to please. So don't hesitate to stop in and see my very good boys and good girls!

I haven't heard about what this year's hurricane season is supposed to be like. It doesn't really matter anyway, they come through when and how they want! I'll just watch to see if the boats come into Hurricane Hole like I used to.

I was hoping to be set up elsewhere by the time the storms roll in and it's still a possibility with your help! I have various ways to donate to make this dream come true, a permanent home for the animals!

I've got the government vet coming in a couple weeks to microchip the horses and donkeys and castrate Dasher, a young ram sheep, We're going to put ear tags in all my sheep and goats to better identify them. I hate to do this to them, but we're going to a more populated area where their collars won't protect them. At least they are a pretty lime green!

Champion came to me with a tick disease called piro plasmosis where a protozoa lives in the red blood cells and eats the muscle tissue away. Treatment involves killing some of those cells off, but they will still be carriers for life for this reason once they test positive they can not be imported to the states.

I have very good news! I'll be looking at land next week near Bolongo to buy! Yes, this is the result of pursuing the possibility of them wanting to do something with their property. I'm still trying to leave some sheep, goats and donkeys on St. John for others to enjoy and am still waiting to hear back from the land owners. In the meantime, I've found a place for me to live in St. T one with hot water and power. Even better, it's solar!

It's been a hot and dry off season so far, but we're still riding. I've got a good lead on land in St. Thomas to lease, although I was really looking to buying something. Flat, woodsy land may become available in St. Thomas after it goes through probate, but down here that may take up to ten years.

I was told of three acres of land in Coral Bay who's owner would like to do something similar to my operation. If it's allowable, I would like to include couples where they stay with me for a week in an eco-tent helping with the chores and rides. I envisioned this after the hurricanes where we'll share meals together and maybe book some charters. That would be an immersive experience for them and fun for me, too. In the meantime, I still need help meeting this month's obligations of rent and insurance. Mostly because I haven't been able to accept bookings after the end of this month.

I know we'll get this sorted out, only thing is most parties with the exception of a handful of people are slow to get back to me about available money or land. A realtor will send me a listing in St. Thomas, for instance, but then never asks if I'd like to see it? Most are in residential areas anyway, so it's a no go from the get go.

If you can continue to help with this complicated move, I'd appreciate it. Although I don't know where yet all we'll be. I'm trying to keep as many little animals on St. John as I can so we'll see! I can't give up on these guys or myself. Like I hear so many times it's a process! Thanks for the encouragement thus far.

I know we've had hands, hooves and claws out looking for help lately. Remember most of us wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for Dana B, that tall, skinny being who walks around all day into the night. We have rent coming up and an isurance bill to pay. If for some reason you can help us with those we'd be grateful! Lots of mouths to feed making lots of doo doo. We have that available, too. Old and new, perfect for the back yard garden. Use straight as a base, $10 a bag.

Nothing goes to waste around here. Leftovers to the dogs and cats and sweets for the horses dem! Not very often do they get a treat like this so when it comes around Jessie likes to savor every bite!
