The June CORE interns wrapped up their fieldwork with a day on the water with St. John Dinghy Rentals' fabulous Mindy Michtner. After reviewing motorboat operation and navigation, these very experienced interns taught one of our divers the basics. Then they got the exciting job of helping Mindy clean the boat hull at sea!

The CORE interns had an amazing visit to Coral World Ocean Reef Initiative. FIrst they scuba dived on the beautiful Coki reef and then assisted with the steps of coral restoration firsthand. Starting with a wild coral that may be 75 years old, hundreds of small pieces are created with a band saw and then mounted onto cement plugs. These tiny corals are raised in tanks or on nursery structures in the ocean. Boulder corals grow very slowly so these projects need great patience!Today’s subject was a Montastrea cavernosa coral that grows only 3 to 4 mm per year. At that rate it may take these little pieces decades to grow to a size where the coral can reproduce, but if most of them survive in our warming ocean, one coral can become many and help repopulate a reef!

The CORE interns spent the day at Lovango Cay, to observe the hawksbill sea turtle nesting beach and to identify corals. Along the way, they found a gym in the jungle, and one lucky winner finished his native plants bingo card! Thank you again to Savannah Peters and the fabulous Lovango Cay Resort!
