During the evenings of this week’s predicted coral spawning window, residents near Peterborg and Hull Bay on St. Thomas may observe intermittent flashes emanating from specialized camera equipment positioned along the shoreline. These devices are apart of a targeted research initiative by VI Reef Response, a coral restoration program based at the University of the Virgin Islands. PUBLIC NOTICE:

We have deployed special cameras at Peterborg and Hull Bay to record timelapses of coral spawning. This is vital data for us to understand the health of our reefs around St. Thomas and if they are reproducing on their own. If you live in area you may see the flash going off in the evenings this week. We ask the public to please not disturb the equipment.

“The BIMS Immersion Program (BIP Week) is a place-based coastal resilience and workforce development experience that integrates SCUBA training, marine and estuarine research, and community-focused conservation. In 2026, BIP Week heads to St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, May 14–18, where 12 scholars will earn PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water certifications with Crucian Adventure Divers and engage in hands-on marine science centered on local ecosystems, sustainability, and community resilience.”
