Who willingly gets up before sunrise to join a room full of Rotarians for breakfast?🥴

Apparently, two remarkable young men do😎

This morning, Rotary Mid-Isle Vice President Willard John and our members had the pleasure of welcoming back two of our scholarship recipients, Daryl Griffith II and Rodney Moorehead Jr. They could have spent their Wednesday morning anywhere, but instead they chose to spend it with us over breakfast, conversation, and a lot of laughter.

The morning had a little bit of everything. Sal had everyone laughing with one of his classic jokes, Chester reminded us why his quick wit is legendary, and together we celebrated John’s birthday. It was the kind of morning that reminds you Rotary is more than a meeting, it’s a community.

Even better, we had the opportunity to hear about what lies ahead for these outstanding young men.

Daryl Griffith II, our 2026 Ocwen USVI Services Scholarship recipient, will begin his studies at the MIT, where he will pursue a degree in Bioengineering Sciences & Research. His academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to serving others have already made an impact here on St. Croix, and we can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next.

Rodney Moorehead Jr., a Carlton Hodgson Memorial Scholarship recipient, is entering his sophomore year at Howard University, where he is pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering. It was wonderful catching up on his college journey and hearing about the experiences shaping his future.

One of the most rewarding parts of the morning was sharing internship opportunities, career advice, and professional connections. Scholarships are about far more than financial support, they’re about continuing to encourage, and mentor our students throughout their academic journey and long after graduation.

At Rotary Mid-Isle, we believe that building a stronger community begins by investing in people. Today’s breakfast was a reminder that when we encourage the next generation, we strengthen the future of St. Croix.

Rotary Mid-Isle President Anestine and our members were honored to welcome Kristi Krieger, RN, BSN, Manager of the Mother & Baby Unit at Juan F. Luis Hospital, as the first Mid-Isle Community Spotlight guest speaker of the new Rotary year.

Kristi, thank you for sharing your experience, perspective, and the important work being done to care for mothers, newborns, and families in our community. Your insights gave our members a deeper understanding of both the opportunities and the challenges facing maternal and infant health on St. Croix.

The Mid-Isle Community Spotlight is more than a guest speaker series. It is an opportunity to learn directly from the people serving our community every day. By listening first, Rotary Mid-Isle can better understand community needs, build meaningful partnerships, and develop service projects that respond to real priorities.

Each Community Spotlight centers around three simple questions:

What is one of the greatest needs or challenges facing our community in your area of work?

How can Rotary Mid-Isle partner with your organization to make a meaningful difference?

If every Rotarian committed to taking one action over the next month to strengthen our community, what would you encourage us to do?

Today’s conversation reminded us that some of the most meaningful service begins with understanding. By listening to those closest to the work, we gain a clearer picture of our community’s strengths, the challenges it faces, and where Rotary Mid-Isle can be a thoughtful partner in creating lasting impact.

Congratulations to Nayelis St. Omer, recipient of the Carlton Hodgson Scholarship, who is pursuing a degree in Construction Science, and J’Neolise Green, recipient of the Ocwen Scholarship, who is pursuing a degree in Social Work.
