‼️🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨 The new Social Security Trustees Report released today shows that the Social Security trust funds are expected to be depleted in 2034, the same year as last year’s estimate. The new projection means Congress will still need to close the remaining shortfall of just under 20%, or Americans will face Social Security cuts that they cannot afford.

Standing Together to Protect Our Elders
This June, AARP Virgin Islands is proud to stand alongside the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Department of Human Services, Disability Rights Center of the Virgin Islands, and community partners to recognize Elder Abuse Awareness Month.

Together, we have issued a joint statement reaffirming our shared commitment to protecting older adults and individuals with disabilities across the Territory.

Elder abuse can take many forms—including financial exploitation, neglect, and emotional harm—and too often, it goes unseen or unreported. But one thing is clear: protecting our elders is a responsibility we all share.

💬 We encourage every Virgin Islander to:
✔ Learn the signs of elder abuse
✔ Speak up if something doesn’t feel right
✔ Support efforts that keep our communities safe

When we work together, we can ensure every older adult can age with dignity, respect, and security.

🚨‼️SCAM ALERT ‼️🚨PLEASE READ‼️

We want to make you aware of a recent increase in phone-based phishing attempts targeting some Bank of St. Croix customers. Several customers have reported receiving calls from individuals falsely claiming to be Bank of St. Croix representatives.

In these cases, callers attempted to:
Verify check numbers or amounts that did not match any legitimate transactions.
Claim there were unauthorized login attempts to their online banking.
Spoof caller ID makes it appear the call is from a bank employee, including members of leadership.
We want to reassure you that these calls did NOT come from Bank of St. Croix. Your information remains secure, and none of the customers who reported these incidents shared any sensitive information.

As a reminder, legitimate bank representatives will never:
Ask to verify full account numbers, passwords, or online banking credentials.
Request sensitive information in response to an unsolicited call.
Pressure you to act urgently or provide private details.
What you can do to stay protected:
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately.
Do not share any personal or financial information.
Call Bank of St. Croix using the official phone number listed on their website or your account documents.
Report any unusual or suspicious activity to Bank of St. Croix right away.
These scams often use Voice over IP (VoIP) technology to disguise caller identity, making the call appear legitimate. Staying cautious is your best defense.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact your local banking center or call our Client Care Center at (800) 280-8280.

The first grassroots procession of what became Memorial Day was in Charleston, South Carolina, the same city where Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter in April 1861. In 1865, roughly 28 formerly enslaved Black Americans decided to do something about the Union soldiers who died in an open-air Confederate prison located at the Washington Race Course and Jockey Club. The dead had been buried in a mass grave on the racecourse.

To give the soldiers a proper burial, they reburied the Union dead, built and painted a fence around the grave site, and inscribed the words “Martyrs of the Race Course” over an archway crafted for the entrance.
