Chess this morning at Sunny Isle Food Court as usual, 10 to noon, and this afternoon at Southgate Baptist Church, 2 to 4. Chess is a valuable educational tool. We have reached out to all schools, public and private, in St. Croix offering equipment and instructional packages. Three schools are on board so far. If you would like to see an after-school chess activity in the school where your children attend, please reach out to the school's administration and let them know. Tell them to contact us at [email protected] and we will set them up. Thanks!

The USVI Chess Federation thanks FIDE America for sponsoring and organizing the CARIFTA 2026 tournament last weekend, an initiative that brought together nearly 500 chess players and allowed the simultaneous participation of 14 Caribbean nations. Players on both St. Crois and St. Thomas gathered at both UVI campuses where centers were set up for this online event. It was wonderful and we look forward to more opportunities like this in the future. Meanwhile, our regular chess clubs on both islands resume this weekend.

This weekend several chess players on St. Croix and St. Thomas are participating in a CARIFTA online tournament. 14 countries and over 425 players have registered so far. Centers are set up on both STX and STT UVI campuses where young players under 18, women, and adults are representing our territory in a weekend of exciting blitz chess games with other Caribbean nations. See attached flyer for details. The new leadership of the USVI Chess Federation has initiated a chess revival in the territory that has opened a myriad of opportunities for our VI community! Talk about dedication! Malik Reed learned the rules of chess at age five from his grandfather on a park bench. He spent his childhood practicing complex opening strategies online and competing against veteran players in city tournaments across the country. This weekend, he secured his final grandmaster norm by defeating a top-ranked international champion in a grueling four-hour match. Malik hopes his achievement encourages more inner-city schools to establish competitive chess programs for youth. Let's show this brilliant young champion some love by sharing his story!
