U.S. Virgin Islands Chess Federation The USVI Chess Association Federation was formed to unite chess players across the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Our goal is to support the VI chess community, support scholastic clubs and events, instruct both young and old, and build strong chess Olympic teams.

After a short "hurricane season" break, chess is back up and running at the Sunny Isle Food Court, every Saturday morning 10 to noon. Other chess gatherings this weekend are at Southgate Baptist Church, Saturday afternoon, 2 to 4:00 and at Ziggy's Island Market on Sunday afternoon, 2:00-4:00. Our annual STX Open FIDE rated tournament is scheduled for December 5-6 at GHCD Pavilion so time to come out and challenge your competition in preparation! 😊 In St. Thomas, the Youth Scholastic Chess Club meets every Sunday at Lockhart K-8 School, 3:00-5:00. All ages, all skill levels welcome at all locations. Please join us!

The US Virgin Islands Chess Federation is in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, doing our best to represent the VI admirably. Last minute unavoidable changes were made to both our open and women's team but the difficulties are now ironed out. Yesterday was Round One and we played against our hardest opponents. Marco Emile, a young player from St. Thomas achieved a draw against a FIDE Master from Algeria rated 2131. We are so proud of him! Another young player from St. Thomas, 11-year-old Dejw Wrensford, held her own yesterday against a much higher rated player from Uruguay. She is an amazing young talent with an appreciation of team spirit and sportsmanship beyond her years. Both Dejw and Marco are reflections of decades of dedicated and thorough coaching by Sinclair Wilkinson. Our board one player on the Open Team, William Van Rensselaer, was also a student of Sinclair Wilkinson.

The chess club at the Sunny Isle Food Court will be taking a break for the month of September. Many of us will be participating in the World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, returning October 1st. We will post lots of pictures and keep you updated on how it's going. Stay tuned! 😊
