This Juneteenth, I want to celebrate the life and legacy of our beloved community member and volunteer, Rheney Angela Hodge Sheen who passed away this month.
She was a true pioneer in the communities of St. Croix and St. Thomas, a rebel, a renegade, and a fearless advocate who gave a voice to those who often went unheard. She left a sparkle on everyone she encountered and touched countless lives through her compassion, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to service.
Known for her many philanthropic contributions throughout the Virgin Islands, she also played a role in the development of numerous projects that positively impacted the people of our islands. Her heart for others was evident in the smallest acts of kindness. After every health fair I participated in, she would collect the leftover Subway sandwiches and distribute them to residents in and around her senior living community, ensuring that no one was forgotten.
She constantly reminded those around her to never neglect themselves and to never silence their beliefs simply to fit in. She stood firmly in her convictions and encouraged others to do the same.
As a member of the Black Panther Movement, she carried stories of courage, sacrifice, and resilience. One of my most treasured memories was when she handed me her phone so I could speak with Assata Shakur, whom she considered a dear friend. Hearing firsthand about the struggles, sacrifices, and victories of those who fought for the advancement of African Americans gave me chills and deepened my appreciation for the path they paved.
What an incredible woman. Your strength, service, and legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. You are loved now and forevermore.
Rest in Paradise
