October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, reminding us all to take an extra moment before you click, respond or give. The Virgin Islands is reminding our community to be vigilant about fraudulent websites, emails and individuals that may falsely represent CFVI or solicit donations on our behalf.

When giving to CFVI, remember:
• Use only the official donation channels listed on CFVI’s website.
• CFVI does not solicit funds based on an urgent need to support a specific family or individual.
• CFVI will never ask you to donate through Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, Apple Pay or other peer-to-peer payment apps.
• If a donation request seems unusual or you’re unsure whether it’s legitimate, contact CFVI directly before contributing.

Your generosity matters — and so does making sure it reaches the people and programs you intend to support.

We are grateful to the community leaders and organizations who are working together in this initiative. As the territory’s official Humanities Council of the Virgin Islands, CFVI is honored to serve, uplift, and engage with the people of the Virgin Islands.

Humanities professionals from across the Virgin Islands gathered virtually Friday to share projects, resources and challenges as part of a new quarterly forum hosted by the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.

Calling all humanities professionals and practitioners across the Virgin Islands and beyond!
CFVI is excited to launch Humanities Conversations, a new quarterly virtual gathering designed to strengthen connections and collaboration across our humanities community.

These conversations will provide a welcoming space to:
• Share project and program updates
• Discuss challenges and opportunities
• Exchange resources and ideas
• Seek feedback and support
• Build relationships with colleagues across the field

Our second Humanities Conversation will take place on Friday, September 25, at 10:00 a.m. AST via Zoom, with future gatherings held on the fourth Friday of each quarter.

CFVI is proud to support two new Urban & Community Forestry grant projects that will put more trees in the ground while expanding food access, strengthening local ecosystems and creating new opportunities for residents to get involved in caring for our natural resources.

🌱 Virgin Islands Trail Alliance (VITAL) will launch Planting Trees for Food Access & Climate Resilience through Community Engagement, planting and caring for native and non-native fruit trees at Anna’s Hope and Spring Gut. The initiative will also bring trees directly into the community through tree giveaways and a new Tree Adoption Program, helping residents select, plant and successfully care for trees on public and private property.

🌿 VI Agriculture Business Center, SBDC will launch the Virgin Islands Community Forestry & Agroforestry Stewardship Cohort Program, establishing community agroforestry and food forest sites and providing hands-on education in tree care, conservation and sustainable urban forestry. With an emphasis on native and culturally significant fruit and medicinal trees, the project will support biodiversity, pollinators, watershed protection, food security and the preservation of local ecological knowledge.

Together, these projects demonstrate how investing in trees can have an impact far beyond the landscape—creating healthier communities, strengthening food systems and building a more sustainable Virgin Islands for generations to come.

Betting on Herself: Meet Rashida A. Hodge Scholarship Recipient Adaina Smith!

From St. Croix to NC State, Adaina is pursuing a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance at North Carolina State University, where she is already finding her community and exploring new opportunities.

The Rashida A. Hodge Scholarship, established by NC State alumna Rashida A. Hodge, provides a USVI public school graduate with four years of full tuition, fees, and housing at NC State, along with access to the university’s Summer Start Program.

For Adaina, the scholarship made the decision to attend NC State possible! We are proud to support Adaina as she continues to bet on herself, pursue her dreams, and carry the Virgin Islands with her every step of the way.

Masquerading connects V.I. Cultural Identity to the American story.

Our Virgin Islands traditions tell powerful stories about who we are, where we come from, and how our history continues to shape our communities today.

We’re pleased to see the St. Thomas Source spotlight the Smithsonian Folklife article, “In the U.S. Virgin Islands, Masquerading Traditions Express Creolization, Cultural Continuity, and Identity.”

The feature, written by Joshua Grant Canning, explores how masquerading reflects the Virgin Islands’ place within the broader American story while celebrating the culture bearers, young people, community organizations, and practitioners who continue to keep these traditions alive.
