The National Book Festival is on!

Congratulations to Danica David, whose book, Creative Callaloo: Art, Poems, and Recipes Inspired by the Virgin Islands, has been selected as the U.S. Virgin Islands' 2026 Adult Great Read from Great Places by the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, the territory's affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book.

The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI), serving as the Humanities Council of the Virgin Islands (HCVI), is proud to announce nearly $300,000 in grants awarded to 13 organizations and individuals across the U.S. Virgin Islands!

These grants will support projects that preserve, share, and celebrate our rich humanities and Caribbean heritage. We are honored to support the people and organizations keeping our history, culture, and stories alive for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who joined CFVI, the Children's Museum of St. Croix, the Virgin Islands Department of Health, and the Virgin Islands Child Psychiatry Access Program for a special day celebrating emotional and reading literacy.

Through interactive read-alouds, creative art projects, puppet shows, story walks and hands-on activities, children explored ways to recognize, understand and express their emotions while building a lifelong love of reading.

We're grateful to our partners and every family who helped make this meaningful day a success. Together, we're creating opportunities for children to learn, grow and thrive.

The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands is now accepting applications for the 2026 Judith A. Towle Environmental Studies Fund. One grant of up to $12,000 will be awarded to support innovative environmental research, education, and conservation projects that address environmental challenges throughout the Caribbean.

Since its establishment in 2003, the Fund has supported impactful projects across the Caribbean—from restoring coastal ecosystems and protecting native wildlife to engaging youth in environmental research and community-based conservation.

Applications are open to Caribbean residents, nonprofit organizations based in or working in the Caribbean, and graduate students conducting Caribbean-focused research. Applications are due September 15, 2026.

📚✨ Reading has the power to spark imagination, build confidence, and strengthen emotional well-being.

This Grade Level Reading Week, the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands is proud to support both the Virgin Islands Children's Museum on St. Thomas and The Children's Museum of St. Croix with $5,000 grants to provide free, engaging literacy experiences for children and families across the territory.

📍 St. Thomas (July 27–31): Explore a storybook STREAM Lab featuring a Caribbean Canopy "Read-In" Fort, interactive storytelling activities, and daily book-inspired experiences. Admission during STREAM Lab hours is FREE!

📍 St. Croix (August 1): Join a special Literacy Event focused on both reading and emotional literacy through story walks, read-alouds, art activities, puppet shows, and hands-on opportunities to help children understand and express their emotions.

Congratulations to Ki'Janne' Alfred and Martial Adrien Webster Jr., recipients of the 2026 Lawyers’ Scholarship, an award created to help aspiring attorneys turn their passion for justice, advocacy, and service into a lifelong career.

Ki'Janne' plans to attend the Howard University School of Law and Martial Adrien Webster Jr. plans to attend Texas Southern University Marshall Thurgood School of Law.

Established in 2022 by St. Croix attorney Lisa Harris Moorhead and former St. Croix attorney Susan Bastress, the Lawyers’ Scholarship was created with a simple but powerful vision: to invest in the next generation of Virgin Islands legal leaders.

The scholarship provides $5,000 annually, renewable throughout the recipient’s legal studies as long as they remain in good academic standing, helping ease the financial burden of law school and allowing students to focus on achieving their goals.

Today, we celebrate not only their accomplishments, but also the promise of what lies ahead. We look forward to seeing the impact they will make in courtrooms, communities, and causes that matter for years to come.

What happens when a mischievous spider, a hummingbird and Carnival come together in one story? A tale that captures the imagination while celebrating the rich storytelling traditions of the Virgin Islands.

The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands is proud to announce Broo 'Nansi and Hummingbird by Mario Picayo as the U.S. Virgin Islands' 2026 Youth Great Read from Great Places selection.

Part of the Under the Big Tree series, this colorful and entertaining story introduces young readers to the beloved trickster Broo 'Nansi while weaving together lessons about generosity, community and the consequences of our choices. Rooted in West African storytelling traditions and shaped by Caribbean culture, the book reflects the unique voices, landscapes and heritage of the Virgin Islands.

As the territory's youth selection, Broo 'Nansi and Hummingbird will represent the U.S. Virgin Islands at the 2026 National Book Festival in Washington, D.C., alongside literary selections from across the nation and territories.
