Happy World Sea Turtle Day!

Did you know sea turtles have been around since the time of dinosaurs!?!

At CWORI we partner with .usvi for sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation. Behind every successful sea turtle release is a dedicated team and countless hours of care.

At CWORI, we are committed to rescue, rehabilitation, and education, ensuring that injured or sick sea turtles get a second chance at life in the wild.

Thank you to our incredible team, volunteers, and supporters who make this work possible! ๐Ÿ’™

Here are 3 simple ways you can protect sea turtles today:

1-Keep beaches dark: turn off lights near beaches so nesting moms and hatchlings can find their way to the ocean safely.
2-Limit single-use plastics: Plastic bags look a lot like jellyfish in the water and those are some turtleโ€™s favorite snacks.
3-Slow down when boating! :Keep a lookout for turtles surfacing for air, especially near shallow reefs and seagrass beds.

Summer in the Caribbean means its fieldwork season, especially for our Sargassum research team! We want to understand the role of Sargassum as a habitat in the USVI. Our team goes out to collect videos of fish under the rafts, dip net samples of Sargassum and clinging fauna, and plankton tows. Our videos are analyzed to identify the different species of fish utilizing sargassum as a habitat ๐ŸŸ. Dip net samples of Sargassum are freshwater rinsed, divided by species and morphotype, and then weighed on the boat and returned to the raft. Our freshwater rinse collects the clinging fauna, these samples are strained and preserved in isopropyl alcohol for species identification and measuring under the microscope back at our facilities ๐Ÿฆ€๐Ÿš๐Ÿฆ

We would love to introduce you to the Conservation Technicians working on our Coral Restoration Foundation funded grant, Lilly & Dโ€™Jani! This project supports coral restoration on Coki Reef! ๐Ÿชธ

Lilly has been with CWORI for a year and a half, and before that interned with us for a summer! Lilly joined CWORI from Canton, OH after earning her BS in Marine, Environmental, and Freshwater Biology from Ohio University. Lilly was a marine science gap year student at Forfar Field Station in the Bahamas and her favorite coral is the smooth flower coral

Dโ€™Jani is a born and raised Saint Thomian, and has been working with CWORI for a year and a half after completing a summer internship while in high school. His favorite animal is snakes and he wants to be a herpetologist one day. Dโ€™Jani is currently training to become an animal rehabilitation technician. His favorite coral is the mountainous star coral We are so happy to have these two working to restore the reef!

This weekend we celebrated World Migratory Bird Day!

Our islands serve as a critical bridge between North and South America. Whether migratory birds are stopping for a snack or staying for the season, these birds remind us how connected we are to the rest of the world.

Letโ€™s keep our spaces bird-friendly!
โœ… Plant native species
โœ… Keep cats indoors
โœ… Reduce plastic use

Happy birding!

If you want to learn more about what of birds you can find in your backyardโ€ฆ? Check out the EBird or Merlin birding apps on your smart phone.

USVI CORAL FUN FACT!

We are incredibly lucky to care for Staghorn corals (๐˜ˆ๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ข ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ด) in our in-water nursery right here at Coki Point!

These iconic branching corals have been hit hard by bleaching events across the Caribbean in recent years. While once very common on reefs, they are now considered functionally extinct in Florida and on the brink of functional extinction in the Virgin Islands. This makes the work we do in the U.S. Virgin Islands more critical than ever.

Each fragment growing in our nursery is a symbol of hope and a reminder of how important coral reef protection is for our islands.

Did You Know - Corals have a symbiotic relationship with tiny organisms commonly referred to as โ€˜zooxanthellaeโ€™, now Symbiodiniaceae! They live inside the coralโ€™s tissue and use sunlight to photosynthesize, providing the coral with the majority of its food. This partnership is what gives corals their vibrant colors and the energy they need to grow big and strong to help build a thriving reef.

How can you help - wear reef safe (zinc based) sunscreen, do not touch corals and reduce your plastic consumption! We are so thankful for the continued support of our community as we work to keep our reefs healthy and resilient.
