Maria Guedez Foundation -what we work for

The Maria Guedez Foundation helps underprivileged children from Venezuela to live better. From sambo practise to a daily meal, the Foundation supports those children in their everyday life. School and social support, hygiene, sexuality and drug prevention : the Foundation creates a healthy environment for children to grow up in and to become great people.

The Foundation was created in January 2017 by the well-known Venezuelian Sambo Athlete Maria Guedez, World Champion, and Mactheuicx Castellanos, multiple times international Sambo medallist, to help children practise sports, train them to become great athletes and people.

The Foundation helped 40 children aged 7 to 12 in 2017, and aims at helping at least 10 times more in 2018, thanks to a team of devoted people including athletes and parents.

Trainings are free and take place everyday from Monday to Saturday: Monday to Wednesday in the Cocuicita covered sports hall, Thursday to Saturday in the streets of Ciudad Chavez.

Headcoach is Willie Garcia, who trained most of Venezuelian world medallists for a total of 14 world medals, and who came 7th in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games in Judo. Junior Ricon and Yesenia Mireles are coach assistants.

The Foundation trains youngsters to be athletes but also assists in their educacion : school support is given by the Foundation’s team. Good manners and morals are also taught in order to bring up the children as good citizens. All children are required to attend school to be accepted in trainings, thus guarantying a healthy balance between sports and academic training.

The Project « LOS CAMPEONES DEL MAÑANA», Champions of Tomorrow, is the first of many projects the Maria Guedez Foundation would like to support. By identifying today’s problems and bringing solutions to the children, the project will create a reliable generation of athletes able to achieve amazing goals such as joining the national team and winning World medals.

Maria Guedez was awarded a flat by the Government following her Sambo World Title in Casablanca in 2015, a flat located in Ciudad Chavez.

When she arrived there, Maria saw many children playing in the streets, children that would stay in the streets all day, that were not going to school and could easily get into mischief. Maria and Mactheuicx decided to give a mean to those children, to give them a daily rythm of life, by iniciating them to sambo and judo: those sports bring high moral values such as respect, modesty, courage, politeness, and it also brings true friendships and self-control .

They took a few mats to the streets to do a demonstration. Children started gathering around, interested in the fight, the technique, the control Maria and Mactheuics showed. Some children stepped on the mat, and there began the story of the Fundacion Maria Guedez, Maria Guedez Foundation.
