Ever heard of the Swiss Quad?

Originally inspired by the legendary HB9CV phased-array concept and popularized in amateur radio literature back in the 1960s—such as E. P. Towers’ (ZS6PP) article in QST magazine—this clever design takes two rectangular loop elements and feeds them using a controlled phase network (like a gamma-matching setup).

Unlike standard parasitic arrays where only one element does the heavy lifting, both loops here are actively driven with a specific phase relationship. This creates sharp constructive and destructive interference, giving you a solid directional radiation pattern and impressive front-to-back ratio while keeping the mechanical structure much simpler and lighter than a bulky cubical quad. No massive booms or complex spreaders required!

Whether you are into contesting, portable field operations, or chasing weak signals, it remains a brilliant piece of antenna engineering elegance.

Have you ever built or operated with a phased loop setup? Let me know in the comments!
