This spring, Zuni Middle School students engaged in traditional dance, food sovereignty, art and career exploration thanks to a partnership between ZYEP and the Zuni Public School District. Through a fourth-quarter elective class and the Rooted in Healthy Traditions after-school program, youth connected with cultural teachings, explored future pathways and built relationships with mentors throughout the community.

A fourth-quarter highlight took place on May 7, when students from the ZMS elective class opened the Zuni Senior Center’s Elder Awareness Day celebration with the buffalo dance, showcasing weeks of learning and practice for their families and Zuni elders. The performance also marked a departure from previous years, when the elective class culminated with the school’s Indigenous Day celebration.

We are pleased to officially welcome Janessa Bowekaty-Harker as our new youth development coordinator! She joined our staff this spring and worked closely with her predecessor, Kiara “Kiki” Zunie, prior to Kiki's departure.

As youth development coordinator, Janessa will oversee and support flagship ZYEP programs such as Summer Camp, the Delapna:we Project, the Rooted in Healthy Traditions after-school program, and the in-school programs held in partnership with Shiwi Ts’ana Elementary School and Zuni Middle School. The role has special significance for her, as she began her own ZYEP journey as a Summer Camp counselor 10 years ago.

This summer, ZYEP will once again welcome some of our community’s youngest athletes to Ho’n A:wan Park as we launch our 4th Annual T-Ball League for children ages 4 and 5. Registration for the league officially opens June 15, with the season running from July 8 through July 31.

ZYEP has space for 40 players, who will be divided into four teams and supported by staff, community coaches and family members throughout the season. Weekly practices will take place on Wednesdays and games on Fridays at 9-10 a.m.

Coach registration begins June 8, and we are seeking eight community coaches to help guide players through the season.

This spring, the gymnasiums at Shiwi Ts’ana Elementary School, Zuni Middle School and Zuni High School filled with the sounds of bouncing basketballs, squeaking shoes and cheering families as young players built skills and confidence through the Zuni Youth Enrichment Project’s 2026 Basketball League. Running from March to mid-May, the league served 172 children ages 6-12.

ZYEP’s annual basketball league remains one of its most popular youth programs. Beyond basketball fundamentals, the league emphasizes teamwork, mentorship, confidence-building and healthy habits — and this year marked the first time ZYEP opened the league to 6-year-old participants, introducing many children to organized basketball for the first time.

For three days at the Desert View Watchtower, visitors gathered around tables filled with Zuni art as three young artists explained their work and carefully wrapped pieces that would soon travel home with people from across the country and around the world. By the final day, a surprising number of the items they showcased in the Grand Canyon Cultural Demonstration Program had sold.

For Vanicka Neha, Tiyana Haloo and Joseph Lucio, the May 11-16 trip to Grand Canyon National Park marked the culmination of the Zuni Youth Enrichment Project’s six-month Advanced Artist Apprenticeship, an intensive professional development program for the top students from ZYEP’s Emerging Artist Apprenticeship cohorts. Made possible with the support of the Bezos Family Foundation, the current program began Nov. 17, 2025 and wrapped up the week of May 18.
