Members of Troop 185 embarked on an extraordinary adventure at Camp Tuscazoar’s Dover Dam weekend… immersing themselves in enlightening lectures, thrilling archeological dig activities, and merit badge requirements to earn the Archaeology Merit Badge. Our Scouts & Leaders further enriched their experience with an exploration of the dam and a visit to the historic town of Zoar and its renowned Civil War Museum.

This weekend, Boy Scout Troop 185 celebrated the crossing over of three hard working Pack 282 Webelos AOL Scouts as they transitioned from Cub Scouts to Scouts BSA! Members from the Troop presented each boy with a Boy Scout Handbook, a congratulatory certificate, Troop numbers and loops for their uniforms and a fire-starter kit. Looking forward to sharing lots of adventures with our newest members of the Troop!

📣 80 Merit Badges Updated for 2026

Scouting America has refreshed 80 merit badges for 2026—some received minor tuneups, while others were fully overhauled to reflect today’s technology, safety practices, and learning needs.

The goal? To modernize and strengthen the merit badge program so it remains relevant, meaningful, and accessible to Scouts.

🔎 Key Updates Now in Effect (as of January 1)

Careers & Hobbies Expanded
Many badges now include both career and hobby exploration options, giving Scouts flexibility to connect their interests to future opportunities.

Personal Fitness Overhaul
• Physical exam requirement removed (Scouts discuss the importance instead)
• Requirements accessible to Scouts with disabilities
• Nutrition language updated for sensitivity
• 12-week program clarified as consecutive (with flexibility for extenuating circumstances)

Modern Technology Added
• Radio now includes Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 5G and RFID
• Model Design and Building includes digital design and 3D printing
• Weather adds checking forecast sources before activities

Safety Enhancements
• Public safety and “If You See Something, Say Something” added
• Travel safety and online safety updated
• Leave No Trace integrated into additional outdoor badges

Other Significant Updates
• Chess expanded to include openings and tournaments
• Search and Rescue clarifies staying put and signaling
• Traffic Safety addresses distracted driving and blind spots
• Wilderness Survival emphasizes planning and decision-making

These updates help ensure Scouts continue developing real-world skills while upholding the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

Each year, our Troop 185 & Pack 282 are invited by our Charter Organization to assist with service in observance of Scout Sunday. This annual event celebrates the 1910 founding of the Boy Scouts of America and emphasizes the values of duty to God, community service, and the principles outlined in the Scout Oath and Law. ⚜️

Scouts held doors, greeted congregants, presented the colors in the processional behind the Cross bearer, led a reading & psalm during service and participated in Communion with their families. Afterward, Scouts made coffee and hot cocoa, ran a bake sale fundraiser, talked with parishioners both in person and on Zoom. Great job everyone! 🙌🏻🥰⛪️

Attention Troop 185 Life & Star Scouts!

📣 Announcement: Special 250th Anniversary Eagle Scout Certificate (2026) 🇺🇸🦅

To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and in recognition of Scouting America’s partnership with America250, Scouting America will present all Eagle Scouts who earn the rank in 2026 with a special commemorative Eagle Scout certificate.

This limited-edition certificate will be available only to Scouts who achieve the Eagle Scout rank during the 2026 calendar year.

✅ What Scouts and units need to know:
• The special certificate will begin issuing automatically starting February 1, 2026
• No special request is required—it will replace the standard Eagle certificate for all 2026 recipients
• Scouts who earned Eagle in January 2026 may request a reprint through their local council using the current complimentary reprint process
• Councils are asked to submit January 2026 reprint requests as a consolidated weekly list to support timely processing

Congratulations to all 2026 Eagle Scouts—this is a meaningful way to honor service, leadership, and achievement during a historic year.

Troop 185 held its Fall Court of Honor this past weekend. We've held these many times before... yet today's felt different and admittedly a bit heavy. Our Patrol Leader served as MC and adjusted our "regular" program to include a moment of silence, distribution of remembrance gifts for a fellow Scout and a farewell to our Scoutmaster Paul Pahoresky. Paul served as Troop 185's Scoutmaster for a decade + (well beyond the years his own son was involved in the Troop and achieved the Rank of Eagle). Together, we proudly celebrated the following earned accomplishments by Scouts in our Troop; 7 Rank Badges, 15 Merit Badges, 2 Special Scouting Awards. Our Assistant Scoutmaster, Jackson, pinned the Parent Pin on Mom's ribbon for the Second Class Rank that had been earned earlier this year by Brody. Afterward, Brody's Mom presented Scouts and Scout Leaders with a custom #13 patch. All focus then turned to Mr. P as he presented a football, a large stack of blue cards, a Scoutmaster's patch and some playful banter to Mr. Jason (who is stepping up to fill this role for our Troop effective immediately) before imparting words of wisdom to our Scouts in his swan song Scoutmaster Minute. The reception afterward provided the opportunity for much needed fellowship among family and friends concluding with several of the boys surrounding Brody's Mom for a full circle hug. Once a Scout Mom - Always a Scout Mom!

We would like to thank Lake Erie Council's Troop 179 in Mentor for their thoughtful shoulder strand paracord remembrance tokens complete with #13 charm wrapped in light blue string (Brody's favorite number and color). Your solidarity & kindness reminds us all that, while our Troop roster may be small, our Scouting community is widespread with Scouts and Scouters alike. We would also like to thank the little sister of two of our Scouts who crafted beaded bracelets for everyone in the Troop. Each gift was unique and clearly made with love. Our Troop thanks you.

Our Troop prepared a photo album to look back, to smile and to reminisce over all the good times we've had together on our many adventures and activities over the past year. Nothing can replace the loss of a beloved scout but cherished photos thoroughly enjoying our many times together bring us much comfort through grief.
