20 FOR TRUMAN 💜

September 28th would have been Truman’s 20th birthday.

In honor of Truman’s life and in recognition of Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, we’re inviting our community to celebrate this upcoming birthday by spreading a little more kindness into the world.

For LGBTQ+ individuals, especially young people, feeling seen, accepted, and supported can make an extraordinary difference. Sometimes, something as simple as checking in, offering encouragement, or reminding someone they belong can mean more than we realize.

That’s the spirit behind 20 for Truman.

Our goal is to celebrate Truman’s 20th birthday with 20 acts of kindness within our community.

Buy someone a coffee. Reach out to a friend. Leave an encouraging note. Help a neighbor. Make sure someone knows they matter.

Whatever kindness looks like to you, we invite you to do it for Truman and for all those whose memories we carry with us.

And please share your kindness with us!

We’re creating a collection of 20 hearts. Each time someone shares an act of kindness, we’ll fill another heart and share our progress in our stories throughout the campaign.

We’re leaving Fall Festival weekend with very full hearts.

Even with a little rain, so many of you stopped by our table to say hello, have a conversation, sign up to stay connected, or simply show your support.

Getting to have those face-to-face conversations is one of our favorite parts of being out in the community. We heard so many kind words this weekend and felt so much love and encouragement for the work we’re doing.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and spent a little piece of your Fall Festival weekend with us. We’re so grateful to be part of this community. 💚

We’re still thinking about last night. 💙

We had the incredible privilege of welcoming author Nico Lang to our community for a conversation about their book, American Teenager: How Trans Kids Are Surviving Hate and Finding Joy in a Turbulent Era.

Nico’s stories—and the stories of the young people and families at the heart of American Teenager—made us laugh, taught us, challenged us, and moved us deeply. It was the kind of conversation that stays with you long after the chairs are put away and everyone has gone home.

A huge thank you to Ellie, for moderating the evening with such thoughtfulness and care, and to every person who showed up ready to listen, learn, ask questions, and be part of this community.

And perhaps the best indication of how much Nico connected with the room? They sold out of books. 🥹📚 We love knowing that these stories are now heading home with so many of you.

When we imagined bringing an event like this to Boone County, this is exactly what we hoped for: people coming together with curiosity, compassion, and a willingness to better understand and support one another.

Nico, thank you for trusting us with these stories and for sharing your time, humor, wisdom, and heart with our community. And thank you to everyone who helped turn an idea into a night we’ll hold dear for a long time.

This week, our board had the opportunity to see Everybody’s Favorite Mothers at Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre. It’s a play inspired by the early days of PFLAG and the mother, Jeanne Manford, who chose to stand publicly beside her gay son.

It was engaging, funny, heartwarming, and heartbreaking — sometimes all within the same few minutes.

And there was something especially meaningful about experiencing this story together. Our board happens to be made up entirely of mothers; each of us, in our own way, just trying to do right by our kids and help build a community where all kids are loved, supported, and free to be themselves.

Seeing PFLAG’s history brought to life on stage was a powerful reminder that this work has always begun somewhere very simple: parents loving their children and deciding to show up for them. We’re incredibly proud to be one small part of carrying that legacy forward. ❤️🏳️‍🌈

Today, we had the opportunity to attend Pride Pathways, a su***de prevention event focused on supporting LGBTQ+ communities and allies. 🏳️‍🌈💚

We were especially glad to partner with our friends at PFLAG Indianapolis for the day! Together, we connected with attendees at our table, shared resources, and represented PFLAG while members of our board also attended the presentation and breakout sessions focused on mental health and advocacy in the LGBTQ+ community.

We left with new knowledge, meaningful connections, and additional crisis-support resources to share with the people and families we serve. We’re grateful for opportunities like this that help us continue learning and strengthen the ways we show up for our community.

Thank you to Equality Indiana and AFSP Indiana Chapter for bringing together such a thoughtful, educational, and well-organized event. ❤️

Today, members of the PFLAG Zionsville/Boone County Board traded keyboards and meeting rooms for gardening gloves and pantry shelves at Trinity Haven.

We spent the day clearing garden beds, pulling weeds and vines, moving planters and trellises, and organizing pantry supplies to help support the residents and staff who make Trinity Haven such an important resource in our community.

Community isn’t built through words alone. It’s built through showing up, lending a hand, sharing a laugh, and sometimes getting a little too excited about an unexpected carrot . 🥕

We’re grateful for the opportunity to support Trinity Haven and their mission of providing safe, affirming housing and support for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults.
