Our volunteers are simply amazing!

At our 2026 Graduation Ceremony last week, we celebrated seven new clients and their service dogs. Behind the scenes, several volunteers helped make the day unforgettable, including:

• Suzanne and Mark R. for creating custom stuffed ICAN dogs that matched each graduate's service dog.

Earlier this month, ICAN was proud to visit the VA Indiana Healthcare System for a special Puppy Love visit celebrating the rollout of a new patient records system.

Ambassador Dogs Belle, Keli, Beau, and Hawkins spent the day meeting more than 200 staff members during a circus-themed employee appreciation event, sharing smiles, tail wags, and a well-deserved moment of connection for the team. We even had the opportunity to meet VA Deputy Secretary Paul Lawrence, who happened to be visiting the medical center that day.
Visits like these are exactly what ICAN's Puppy Love program is all about.

Puppy Love gives organizations a unique way to boost morale, strengthen workplace culture, and create meaningful shared experiences through the power of dogs. Whether celebrating a major milestone, recognizing employees, or supporting well-being initiatives, our dogs have a special way of bringing people together.

This visit was especially meaningful because of ICAN's longstanding commitment to serving Veterans. We are honored to partner with organizations like the VA that care for those who have served our country, particularly as we work to place highly skilled psychiatric service dogs with Veterans facing the challenges of PTSD and other service-related trauma. Supporting Veterans through the life-changing partnership of a service dog is a vital part of our mission, making opportunities like this one especially close to our hearts.

This week, like so many others, we're remembering the extraordinary life and legacy of Dolly Parton, whose music, generosity, and kindness touched millions.

Her passing has us thinking of a very special ICAN dog.

Meet ICAN Dolly. ❤️

Born in 2021 as part of our "Musical Divas" litter, Dolly was named after the beloved icon. When it came time for her sponsors, Joe and Lynn Newkirk, to officially name her, they had the opportunity to choose something new. Instead, they decided there was only one name that fit.

"Dolly Parton had such a philanthropic spirit and had become a beacon of hope and kindness for many, so we decided to keep it," the Newkirks said.

ICAN Dolly graduated in 2023 and was placed with her client Kevin as a mobility assistance dog. At just 16 years old, Kevin received a life-altering diagnosis of diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a rare and inoperable brainstem tumor. Following radiation treatments and a brain bleed that affected his mobility, Kevin adapted to new challenges and found a steadfast partner in Dolly, who helps him navigate daily life with greater confidence and independence.

Just like ICAN Dolly does for Kevin, Dolly Parton brought joy to everyone she met. Her legacy of kindness lives on in countless ways, including through a remarkable service dog who proudly carries her name. 🐾💙

To earn the love of a service dog is a privilege. To trust that dog with your independence is life-changing. Every ICAN service dog is trained to do more than provide assistance; they provide confidence, freedom, and unwavering support through a partnership unlike any other.

Today, more than 50 people are waiting for an ICAN service dog. It costs more than $30,000 to raise and train each dog, but to ensure accessibility, clients are asked to pay only about 10% of that cost.

A big thank you to IDOC Pendleton Correctional Facility for welcoming us for our very first puppy class inside the prison!

With an especially large group of puppies joining the ICAN family this summer, it was a wonderful opportunity to bring many of our current pups and volunteer puppy raisers together in one place. During the visit, they demonstrated the skills and experiences puppies learn between 8 and 16 weeks of age, a critical stage in their development before they eventually begin training with their future handlers.

It was a meaningful opportunity for our incarcerated trainers to see the foundation being built long before these dogs enter the prison training program, and a great reminder that every service dog's journey begins with many hands working together. 🐾❤️
