Reading together for just a few minutes each day helps children develop vocabulary, communication skills, and a love of books, but it also creates something just as important. It gives families a chance to slow down, connect, and build routines that can last a lifetime.

Those moments may only last a few minutes today, but they help shape a child’s future for years to come.

We had a great reason to head to Detroit last week as communities across Michigan celebrated National Health Center Week!

Reach Out and Read Michigan joined Community Health and Social Services (CHASS) Center for their 14th Annual 5K Run/Walk and Kid’s Superhero Run in Mexicantown. It was a fun day filled with families, community connections, and even a few special visitors — Paws from the Detroit Tigers, Sparty, and Hooper from the Detroit Pistons!

National Health Center Week gives us an opportunity to celebrate the community health centers that show up for Michigan children and families every day. We’re grateful to partner with organizations like CHASS and to see that work in action.

Thank you, CHASS, for having us!

Last week, we celebrated National Health Center Week and the incredible community health centers across Michigan that care for children and families every day.

Reach Out and Read Michigan had the opportunity to join Great Lakes Bay Health Centers at the Janes Street Academic Community Health Center in Saginaw for their Back to School Event. It was a wonderful day connecting with families and celebrating the important role community health centers play in helping children grow, learn, and thrive.

We’re grateful for partners like Great Lakes Bay Health Centers and Pediatric Care Coordinator, Paige Speer who help make early literacy part of caring for children and families across Michigan.

Thank you for letting us celebrate National Health Center Week with you!

Thank you for having us!

Many people think learning to read begins in kindergarten, but the foundation starts much earlier.

Every conversation, every nursery rhyme, and every book shared with a caregiver helps build the language and literacy skills children need long before they ever step into a classroom.

Every well-child visit is an opportunity to support a child’s healthy development, and that’s exactly where Reach Out and Read Michigan begins.

When a pediatric provider places a book into a child’s hands and encourages families to read together, they’re doing more than giving away a story.

They’re helping build language, strengthening relationships, and supporting healthy brain development from the very beginning.

Parents hear a lot about what they should be doing.

Sometimes they simply need to hear, "You're doing a great job."

Even a few minutes of sharing a book, pointing to pictures, or talking about what's on the page helps your child learn.

Progress, not perfection!
