Hello Fuzzy Friends!
It is the last Friday of the month — and we saved one of our favorites for today.

Meet Marshmallow! We call her Mellow for short. I think she was originally named Marshmallow because her coloring looks like a toasted Marshmallow 🤣
She is one of the sweetest, smartest, most curious horses we have. She loves water and will get in the sprayer every chance she gets. If there is no sprayer we find her in the water trough splashing. She has a youthful curiosity the we all love. Mellow has worked with people of all abilities but spent time working with Special Olympics and has performed in their parades. The connection you feel when you meet her is remarkable.
Over the past month you have met Cookie, Luna, Amber, and now Mellow. These animals are not just residents — they are the heartbeat of Fuzzy Faces Refuge. They are why we get up at 6am every single morning.

We hope you have fallen a little bit in love with them. We think they would say the feeling is mutual.

One month down. A whole lot more story to tell. Thank you for being here.

Today we got Lucky the Muscovy duck. He was donated to our refuge because he was stuck in the city in someone’s backyard. He was a lonely guy.
Betsy one of our female Muscovys was lonely too. She doesn’t like the boys in her neighborhood so she moved over to the second pond we have and sat alone.
I hoped Lucky and Betsy would become friends and it looks like they have❤️🥰

Love these moments

There are moments in life that seem too quiet to matter.

No applause. No grand gesture. No words.

Just a horse standing beside a human, resting its head against a shoulder as if the entire weight of the world has finally become lighter.

But anyone who has ever earned the trust of a horse knows that moments like this are anything but ordinary.

A horse is a prey animal. For thousands of years, survival depended on noticing every movement, every sound, every possible threat. Their instincts are ancient. Their awareness is constant. They do not give trust away carelessly.

That is why this image speaks so loudly.

When a horse lowers its guard and chooses to stand close, it is making a decision. It is saying, without words, “I feel safe here.”

Not because it was forced.

Not because it was trained.

Because it chose to.

Real trust is never demanded. It is earned through patience, consistency, kindness, and countless small moments that nobody else sees. The early mornings. The quiet grooming sessions. The walks with no destination. The days when nothing remarkable happened except showing up again and again.

People often think horses teach us how to ride.

In reality, they teach us something far more important.

They teach us how to listen.

How to slow down.

How to be present.

How to become the kind of person another living soul feels safe beside.

A horse does not care about your status, your money, your appearance, or your achievements. It only responds to who you truly are when all masks disappear.

And when that trust finally arrives, it feels sacred.

Because you realize that love is not always loud.

Sometimes love is a warm breath on your shoulder.

A soft eye closing in peace.

A gentle head resting against you after a long day.

A silent promise that says, “I know I am safe with you.”

In a world that moves too fast, horses remind us of something we desperately need to remember:

The deepest connections are often the quietest ones.

And the greatest compliment a horse can give is not obedience.

It is trust.

The kind of trust that cannot be bought.

Cannot be rushed.

Cannot be faked.

Only earned.

And once it is earned, it becomes one of the most beautiful friendships a person will ever know.

7am on the Refuge looks like this.

Before anything else, the animals eat and waters filled. Horses get checked and fed, goats fed and out to graze, and we walk every inch of the property making sure everyone is safe, healthy, and happy.

It is work that never stops — 365 days a year, no holidays, no sick days. And we would not trade it for anything.

Happy Friday! Time to meet another one of our fuzzy faces.

This week we are introducing you to Luna who is honestly the best goat massage therapist out there! She loves her job and jumps up to give massages to anyone who bends over low enough for her to work her magic.

Luna is a San Clemente Island goat and has been with us since 2025. She might only be a yearling but everyone who meets her always says how sweet and loving she is. She is usually the first one to come up and meet new people and immediately loves them and loves getting pets and scratches. She doesn’t even want to be bribed with treats (and that says something about her curious personality)

We think animals deserve to be known — not just as a group, but as individuals. That is part of what makes healing with them so powerful.

Horses Give Us Purpose

Most people have never heard of the San Clemente Island goat. Here is why that needs to change.

1. They are one of the rarest goat breeds in the world — fewer than 1,000 remain.

2. They lived on San Clemente Island off the California coast for hundreds of years before nearly going extinct.

3. In the 1980s, the U.S. Navy began removing them from the island. At one point, the population dropped to fewer than 100 animals.

4. They have a distinctive, elegant appearance — upright ears, a refined face, and a calm, intelligent temperament.

5. Fuzzy Faces Refuge is one of a small number of sanctuaries in North Carolina actively helping to preserve this breed for future generations.
