This post has so many, many important things to note about predators and their behaviors, I’m not even sure where to start!
I’m grateful the Judge sentenced him as he did. Hopefully he never again has access to children.
82-YEAR-OLD CHILD S*X OFFENDER SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS, SHOWS NO REMORSE
Using a walker, 82-year-old Garry L. Giles of West Mansfield entered the courtroom Friday afternoon hoping for a short prison sentence. However, those hopes were shattered when Judge Don Fraser imposed the full sentence sought by Union County Prosecuting Attorney David Phillips—25 years in prison.
Giles pleaded guilty to five counts of Gross Sexual Imposition, each a third-degree felony carrying a maximum sentence of five years. The charges stemmed from an investigation led by Union County Sheriff’s Detective Seth McDowell, which revealed that Giles repeatedly molested two young family members. Despite his warnings for them “not to tell,” one of the victims confided in their mother, disclosing that Giles had touched their private areas. The mother immediately contacted law enforcement.
The young victims, ages 5 to 8, were taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for forensic interviews and medical examinations, where they provided detailed accounts of the abuse. Investigators learned that Giles also showed the girls po*******hy, a well-documented grooming tactic used by child predators to desensitize victims to s*xual acts.
As the investigation unfolded, Detective McDowell discovered additional victims dating back 45 years, who disclosed being s*xually assaulted in nearly identical fashion.
When confronted, Giles initially admitted to inappropriate touching with a dismissive, “Uhhhh, yeah.” However, he continued to deflect blame onto the young girls, minimizing his actions and claiming the abuse was accidental. Even at sentencing, Giles told the judge he "didn’t really think it was as bad as it’s made out to be.”
During the hearing, the victims’ mother spoke about the devastating impact of Giles’ abuse on her daughters. Two of his prior victims—assaulted decades ago—also addressed the court, sharing their own experiences. One of the women asked Giles for an apology, but he refused to acknowledge his wrongdoing. Instead, he falsely claimed the abuse was nothing more than an accident while bathing the victim as a child—a blatant misrepresentation of his predatory behavior.
In addition to his lengthy prison term, Giles will be required to register as a Tier II s*x offender upon his release.
