Welcome friends!!! Our group historian Patti Clarke wrote up a little story about “Sunshine” the first self propelled combine in Yuma County that was donated to the group. Here is a short walk around of the combine. Be sure to look for it at the show September 11-13, 2026!
The, “Sunshine” Self-Propelled Combine was invented in 1923 by H.V McKay. The harvester was made at the Sunshine Harvester works, in Sunshine, Victoria Australia. A self-propelled auto-header was built at Sunshine from 1924. McKay designed the machine that included gathering, cutting, threshing, windrowing, cleaning the grain and bagging in one operation.
The harvester was first horse drawn later transferred to diesel engines that could cover much more ground in one day and use fewer men to assist with the process.
In 1930, the Canadian farm machinery manufacturer Massey Harris bought a controlling interest in H.V. McKay Pty Ltd, with the Australian operations the firms being merged under the title H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd.
Throughout World War II, H.V. McKay Massey Harris exported 20,000 Sunshine drills, disc harrows and binders to England, to help with an increase in food production.
In the 1950s, the McKay family sold out to the newly-formed agricultural implement conglomerate Massey Ferguson, which was a combination of the Canadian and American interests of Massey Harris, and the British tractor firm of Harry Ferguson.
Today Sunshine self-propelled combines can be found by collectors and Historical preservationists.
The Old Threshers Group of Yuma, Colorado received a donation of a 1930 (approximately) model of a sunshine self-propelled combine. It is stored on the grounds of Old Threshers and is on display during our Old Thresher’s days in September.
