“Arizona NAEP Scores
Arizona's most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores, released in September 2025, show continued declines in student achievement, particularly in reading and science.

Eighth-graders' science scores fell 4 points since 2019, while 12th-graders' math and reading scores declined by 3 points each, reflecting a persistent national trend that has not reversed since the pandemic.

These results come amid significant changes to the U.S. Education Department, including staff cuts at the Institute of Education Sciences, which oversees NAEP data processing.

In 2024, Arizona ranked eighth among western states in fourth-grade reading, but scored below the national average of 237 with a score of 232.

This marked a significant decline from previous years, with fourth-grade reading scores dropping to 208, the lowest since the first national report card over 30 years ago.

Eighth-grade math scores in Arizona also declined slightly from 2022 and represented the lowest level since 2003, despite ranking fifth among western states.

While math proficiency rates improved in many states between 2022 and 2024, Arizona did not see gains in either fourth or eighth-grade math, and proficiency levels remain below pre-pandemic benchmarks.

Arizona charter school students scored 11.5% below the national average on NAEP tests from 2009 to 2019, placing the state 39th out of 50 states and D.C. in charter school performance.

Despite these challenges, Arizona's Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Horne, attributes the struggles to the pandemic but maintains that strong leadership and targeted interventions can overcome economic disparities.”

Oh, please! We beg to differ.
What is this “strong leadership” that he’s referring to?
Horne’s leadership is severely lacking, at best.
Targeted interventions? Care to elaborate, Mr. Horne?
The children of Arizona deserve better.
