I have spent the better half of the last two hours trying to figure out exactly what I'm trying to say with this post. I hope this is clear and direct. I don't owe ANYONE an explanation for choosing to close the cat shelter beyond what I have already made clear. I don't need the hate messages, the rude texts, or trashy comments. I also don't need the horrible and untrue accusations that are all of a sudden popping up! That being said, I am simply going to be deleting and blocking those of you who are choosing to belittle, bully, and spread lies. You are NOT worth our time!

My heart is fragile and this decision did NOT come lightly. Nobody understands what being a rescuer is like until you have done it yourself. Until you've been the one getting up at one a.m. and rushing to Mexico to save someone else's pet! Until you are the one they call because they are being evicted TOMORROW and have nowhere for six dogs to go and now it's your problem! Until you are the one holding a kitten as it gasps for its last breath and dies in your arms despite all the hard work you spent keeping it alive since 2 a.m. Until you are the one standing in a urine and f***s soaked trailer riddled with roaches and mice while 21 innocent lives stare up at you pleading for help!

I could go on and on about the struggles I have faced over the years. The TRAUMA I have seen and endured. But I'm not here for you to feel sorry for me, I chose this because it MADE A DIFFERENCE! I wanted to be the change I want in the world! And I have done that! And I am proud of my years of rescue work! There's not a single person that has the right to tell me when enough is enough or which way this rescue should continue or what path our future holds! And to choose to go out of your way and message me with mean and derogatory and downright hateful messages is outrageous and will not be tolerated or responded to! I am simply asking the childhood rule to be applied "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all" it's quite simple! At least I think it is.

To those of you who support us? Thank you! You are seen you are heard and you are BEYOND appreciated! In no way do we wish to overshadow the love and understanding of the many! You are seen and we hear you.

Much love,
Megan

Tell me you aren't a rescuer without telling me you aren't a rescuer....... Anyone who thinks we only want to rescue English bulldogs because we can profit off them is CLEARLY not aware of the money we put into them before adopting them out. Most English bulldogs from shelters have cherry eyes, ingrown tails, bad teeth, arthritis, need to be neutered and vaccinated, poor skin that requires tons of bathing and meds, specific diets may be required, and so much more!

Please can we stop with the accusations and negativity both on our page and in our inbox! Instead how about you volunteer? Call some rescues and help us network the cats? Come in and clean kennels? Show up and take pictures and post to your social media?

We are non profit for a reason! We are run by all volunteers for a reason! We are not out to make money on a specific breed! It's called having a passion for a certain breed that is euthanized daily for space and medical reasons!

So you heard we are closing our doors? Well yes this is true, September 1st is our goal to shutdown the cat shelter and get all the cats into homes, rescues, or other shelters. Euthanasia may be a possibility if there's no place for them to go. I know nobody wants to hear that but sadly what else do we do if NOBODY will take them? :( just throw them outside like everyone else? Ideas are welcome ;)

That being said I want to clarify that we are not dissolving our 501(c)3 and we will remain active but in a different manner. Our focus is going to turn to rescuing English bulldogs from high kill shelters. We will only rescue what we have foster homes and finances for. This will be a focused effort. We will not be doing anything else for quite awhile. I just need a break! I need time to be a mom and a wife again. I know some people won't understand this decision and that's okay but I have to put my mental health and my family first.

Lastly, this does NOT mean that we won't be needing help. Actually right now we need more help than ever! We need lots of shares! We need donations to finish up the last few months of rent, we need help cleaning and packing things up, etc. Your time and efforts are appreciated. All you have to do is show up and we will put you to work. Be on the lookout on this page for further specific dates where we will need your help!

Love,
Megan and Family

Hello Everyone,

It is with great sadness that I am here to inform the community that Homeward Bound Animal Rescue will be closing it's doors by September 1st, 2026.

I have enjoyed these last few years and I am honored to have made a difference in the lives of hundreds upon hundreds of animals. Now it's time for me to focus on my family, my marriage, my kids, and my mental health.

That being said, we need our animals adopted or relocated out to other rescues. Our adoption fees are also going to be dropped to $0 so that it encourages people to come and get a cat from us.

I'm sorry everyone I just can't go on anymore. It's all just become too much and before anyone criticizes my decision just know I am more than willing to hand over directorship to someone else if they feel they can do this full time unpaid "job"

Thank you,
Megan Springer

We have two adorable pitbull mix puppies, around 7.5-8 weeks old, who are looking for a foster home or foster to adopt home. One of them does have a cleft lip and the only thing it affects is his smile. He eats and drinks fine :) we have them in quarantine for now but they'll be ready to move in a week and a half as long as nothing comes up health wise. If you are interested in one of them please send an email to [email protected] and we will get back to you in 24-48 hours.

Thanks!

🐾 Hi, I’m El Tigre 💛

I’m just a tiny little guy with a big personality and a heart full of purrs. The humans think I can see light and shadows, but I mostly feel my way through the world with my whiskers, my nose, and my brave little paws. I may be small, but I’m already one very special kitten.

I’m still growing, and every bit of help means the world to me. Donations go toward my vet care, shots, food, and all the extra love I need to keep getting stronger.

💛 Please donate at yhbr.org and help me keep thriving. Every gift helps a tiny rescue kitty like me take another sweet little step forward.

YUMA, WE URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP! 🐾❤️

Kitten season is hitting hard and our morning crew desperately needs extra hands! Even volunteering just ONE morning a week can make a huge difference for the animals in our care.

We are currently looking for dependable morning volunteers from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to help with:
🐱 Cleaning litter boxes
🐱 Feeding and watering cats
🐱 Washing and changing bedding
🐱 Helping keep the shelter clean, safe, and comfortable

Rescue animals rely on people like YOU. Without volunteers, it becomes incredibly difficult to keep up with the daily care these cats deserve. The good news? You don’t have to commit every day to make an impact. Even a couple hours a week helps tremendously!

If you’ve been wanting to get involved, meet fellow animal lovers, or make a real difference in your community, now is the perfect time. We would LOVE to welcome you to the Homeward Bound family. 🖤

Interested in volunteering? Please email us at [email protected]

I have done my best to avoid making a public statement regarding this situation, but ongoing accusations and harassment have pushed things to a point where clarification is necessary.

Recently, we began utilizing a new veterinary clinic, Norcat, for some of our rescue animals. Initially, we had positive experiences and felt comfortable recommending their services to others seeking affordable veterinary care.

One individual chose to foster kittens independently (not through homeward bound at all) despite recently having confirmed cases of panleukopenia in her care. Unfortunately, the new kittens she took in also contracted panleukopenia. She then reached out to us for assistance, including access to our affordable veterinary resources and transportation help from one of our volunteers.

Despite veterinary intervention, one of the kittens sadly passed away. Any loss of life is heartbreaking, especially when it involves innocent animals. However, panleukopenia is an extremely aggressive and highly fatal disease, even with prompt and appropriate medical care given by norcat. I genuinely believe the veterinarian did the best he could with the circumstances presented.

Separately, we recently had kittens return from care at the same clinic underweight and in poor hygienic condition while being treated for coccidia and giardia which causes major diarrhea. Because of those concerns, we are now hesitant to use this clinic moving forward

What is most upsetting, however, is the behavior that followed. Instead of asking questions or communicating respectfully, this situation escalated into public accusations and hostility directed not only at myself, but also at people who were simply trying to help. As a direct result, one of our volunteer transporters — someone who generously donated their time and energy to help rescue animals receive care — was considering stepping away entirely but has graciously chosen to continue despite the online harassment.

The reality is that our rescue operates on extremely limited resources. Affordable veterinary care and volunteer transport assistance are critical to our ability to continue helping animals. Losing those resources would place our future in serious jeopardy. We are thankful to Norcat vet for their previous assistance with our animals. We did feel he went above and beyond and maybe this was just a minor mishap or miscommunication on many levels. We may give this clinic a try in the future if we feel necessary.

To be absolutely clear: we never forced anyone to use a specific veterinarian, foster animals, or accept our assistance. Adults make their own choices, and with rescue work comes difficult realities, heartbreaking outcomes, and risks that cannot always be controlled — especially with devastating illnesses like panleukopenia.

We will continue doing our best for the animals in our care while also protecting our volunteers, our rescue, and our peace.
