Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor Matt Pinnell visited several cornerstones of the Oklahoma wine industry this week, alongside Oklahoma Department of Agriculture representatives Madi Franklin, Viticulture & Enology Coordinator, and Meriruth Sellers, Director of Market Development. The visit offered a full-circle look at Oklahoma’s wine industry, spanning grower (C&H Garden Vineyard), winemaker (Sabatia), and agritourism destination (Bridging Vines Winery & Brewery).

The visit also sparked forward-looking conversation about the future of Oklahoma’s wine industry. OWVA President Dan Montreuil and Vice President Steve Sneed shared new ideas for growth, including the development of a Governor’s Cup competition to serve as a launchpad for emerging wineries and Oklahoma’s fine wine industry. Many states already have this in place, as it promotes the agriculture, winery, and tourism sectors. They also discussed an excise tax strategy that would allocate a portion of proceeds to a dedicated fund supporting industry growth.

Lt. Gov. Pinnell’s visit underscores the growing role wine plays in Oklahoma’s economic future. OWVA will keep members updated as these proposals develop.
