🎉🐻 Happy 82nd Birthday, Smokey Bear!

Today we’re celebrating an American icon and 82 years of a message that remains incredibly important to our desert communities: wildfire prevention is everyone’s responsibility.

This photo takes us back to the installation of the fire warning sign along Highway 62 in the Morongo Basin — one of the many ways we work to keep wildfire awareness visible and top of mind for residents and visitors alike.

In a region where wildfire is a year-round concern, Smokey’s message continues to matter just as much today as it did when he first appeared in 1944.

Happy Birthday, Smokey! Here’s to 82 years of helping protect our communities and wildlands. 🐻🔥🌵

Only YOU can prevent wildfires.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT 🚩

Beginning this evening at 5 PM, hot temperatures, low humidity, gusty winds, and the potential for dry lightning may create conditions that support rapid fire spread. Elevated fire weather conditions are expected to continue through 11 AM Wednesday.

Impacted areas include communities throughout San Bernardino, Inyo, and Mono counties, including portions of the Inland Empire, the San Bernardino National Forest, Joshua Tree National Park, the Mojave Desert, the Owens Valley, the Eastern Sierra, and surrounding mountain and desert communities.

Avoid activities that could create sparks, stay aware of changing conditions, and be prepared if conditions change ➡️ http://ReadyForWildfire.org.

Fire doesn’t need much to take everything.

After the Skyline Fire in Yucca Valley burned 39 acres and destroyed multiple structures, the reality hit close to home for a lot of people.

Some properties made it. Some didn’t.
The difference? Preparation.

“Zone Zero” — the first 0–5 feet around your home — is where homes are won or lost. Clear it, maintain it, own it.

Out here, defensible space isn’t optional. It’s survival.

We’re out in the community every day offering free wildfire risk assessments because the goal is simple:
reach as many residents as possible before the next fire, not after.

Looks like the wind wanted a front row seat… and maybe to take the tents with it.
We’re rescheduling to May 9.
Weather may be unpredictable, but being prepared isn’t.
