Ella Burtram's journey to Crafton Hills College is rooted in resilience, purpose, and hope. A first-generation college student from Yucaipa, California, Ella chose CHC because it was close to home—but she stayed because of something deeper. From the moment she stepped onto the campus she describes as “absolutely gorgeous,” Ella found an environment filled with people and staff who genuinely cared. That sense of belonging, she says, has made it an honor to be a Roadrunner.

Pursuing a degree in Psychology, with plans to graduate in June 2028, Ella is driven by a desire to understand people more deeply and help them navigate their emotions. Her goals extend beyond Crafton Hills: she plans to transfer to a four-year university to earn her bachelor’s degree, and eventually a master’s degree in psychology.

Gino Howard says he “lucked out.”

When he began attending Crafton Hills College in the early 2010s, it was a kind gesture from psychology professor Diane Pfahler that made him feel like he belonged.

“During my second semester, I took my first psychology class with this great professor, who told us about the Psychology Club and how to really get involved,” shared Howard. “She took her time to explain how we could embed ourselves into the college and get the most of our experience.”

Now, himself a psychology professor at Cal State San Bernardino, Howard is eager to pay it forward by teaching beginning Cal State San Bernardino students how to discover and build their own community. He called this one of the “coolest parts” of his job.

Behind every graduate is a support system that helped them reach the finish line.

As we celebrate the Class of 2026, we also celebrate the families, friends, mentors, faculty and loved ones who supported our students along the way. Graduates, take a moment to reflect on the people who helped make this achievement possible and don’t forget to thank them.

For the Mitchell siblings, college was never just an individual journey. It became a shared experience built on perseverance, sacrifice, and support for one another every step of the way.

On May 15, siblings Makayla, David, and Maranda Mitchell graduated together from Crafton Hills College with a combined 12 associate degrees before transferring to California State University, San Bernardino in the fall.

Makayla Mitchell, the oldest sibling, is graduating with seven degrees in Math, Computer Science, History, Sociology, Economics, Spanish, and Business after spending six years at Crafton. Her younger brother, David, is graduating with four degrees in History, Sociology, Spanish, and Anthropology. Their younger sister, Maranda — who is only 10-and-a-half months younger than David — will graduate with a degree in Math.

“We were not originally planning on all going to Crafton at the same time,” Makayla said. “But it ended up being one of the best experiences for all of us.”
