Picked up this gem! I opened to the hike we will be taking this Saturday and here’s some more great info.

Length - 7.2 miles

Level 3 - this is a moderately challenging hike and suitable for reasonably fit adults.

I just love the description!

“ Most people like to know what heaven is like. This trip to Loch Leven Lakes is unlikely to be your final resting place yet it provides a glimpse of what heaven might be. Although there is some road noise at the beginning of this trip, the end is well worth it. You get sweeping vistas of ridges and valleys, gorgeous high, Alpine Meadows, and glaciated mountain terrain, with a series of pretty lakes.

The trail starts at 5680 feet, then works its way upward on a moderate grade to the Southwest. Granite outcrops are numerous and huge boulders (deposited by receding glaciers) lie sprinkled among Jeffrey Pines in lodgepole pine. In the first 1.1 mile, the trail crosses a creek and railroad tracks. It then climbs through a forest. Here the trail becomes steeper, where you climb 800 feet in 1.25 miles. It then tops the summit, and descends gently to lower Loch Leven Lake (2.5 miles from the trailhead). Many people stop here content to just take in the surroundings. But you can forge on for another mile circling middle Loch Leven lake (2.8 miles from the trailhead) and heading east up to High Loch Leven Lake (3.6 miles from the trailhead) at 6800 feet. At the south end of Lower Loch Leven Lake, turn left at the trail Junction to see Middle and High Loch Leven Lakes. Once you have come this far beautiful High Loch Leven is an easy trip and a must do.”

This hike is not without challenges/frustrations. The first hour involves a continuous climb with the echo of I -80 traffic in the background, but the noise will dissipate and picturesque scenes will emerge.

Looking forward to Saturday September 9. Meeting up at 6:30 am at the Bogue Road Starbucks

Forest bathing anyone?

The islands at the southern end of Japan have historically been known for longevity, once called the land of immortals. Despite years of hardship, Okinawans have established a lifestyle and environment to live long, healthy lives. Part of that lifestyle includes spending time in nature (forest bathing).

Forest bathing can help you to live longer, better!

Here’s a true story that happened last night.

My post about “ Things to think about when Hiking” may have come across harsh or condescending. That wasn’t my intention at all.

One of my steadfast rules of hiking is to not hike alone. Most rules I stand firm on I’ve broke once and learned a “cheap lesson” meaning I’m alive to tell the story.

So many reasons why alone is not good.

Over exertion
Dehydration
Turn of an ankle
Fall and roll off the trail… no one to witness where you are.
Stranger danger (this is the least of my fears but can happen)
Animals like bear, rattlesnakes and Mountain Lion ( the big kitties scare me the most. You can’t hear them and they can stalk you)
Low blood sugar
Electrolytes getting wacked.
And so many other things…..

Having said all this I’ve hiked 20 plus years short and long distance and only had two of these episodes dehydration and my sugar got low to a point that I was shaking, stopped, ate, got righted and was back on the trail.

I have seen rattlesnakes and bears… no big kitties. Thank goodness!

Here’s why I’m sharing.
Last night I got a text from a good friend I’ve been hiking with for the past 23 years.

She is backpacking and now layed over in Mammoth for two days. ( the event took place 15 miles in the wilderness from mammoth)

My friends hiking partner got her attention through the tent walls. The scenario goes like this.

“At one point she said "not to be mellow dramatic but I don't think I am going to make it thru the night". She's a retired doctor and it was "a moment" for sure. She was inside her tent lying down and I was outside getting pummeled by mosquitoes to communicate thru the Garmin on the open rock and also help her with whatever she thought would help. She wasn't evacuated until 1140pm and I didn't even realize it until I crawled in my tent at 1215am that night”

“Thinking she might die before the helicopter arrived was like holy s**t- I am here alone with her and.....”

The doctor got air evacuated and to an ER. She got fluids , electrolytes and is heading home today.

Here’s the thing…
Hiking is a beautiful sport
Hiking and your surroundings MUST be respected.
Hiking is remote so getting hurt or having a medical situation means you are far from professional help.

My purpose isn’t to scare or disillusion anyone from the experience but to help anyone who may not know these concerns understand it’s not like other sports where you’re on a field or court and can just call for an ambulance should an emergency happen.

My only intention is to educate and share the love of hiking safely.

Hello Wander Women 😀

Can I tell you a story?
A few years back I wanted to ride the “Hole in the Wall Gang” trail through the mountains of Wyoming( think Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid). This wasn’t a hike but would be a consecutive day horseback ride. When I called the tour outfit I asked, “ Do you need experience? Should you know horse skills? The tour guide responded, “ Have you ever played tennis? I answered, “ No.” She said “Well, tennis is a lot more fun for YOU and others to play when everyone has some experience.” Needless to say, I decided that until I got some experience on a horse I would shelf that experience for a while.
Years later I rode and drove cattle for 85 miles on a horse right into the Reno Rodeo Arena. However, I trained for weeks one hour in the morning several days a week to be ready for the long ride. Yes, I was still sore each day but I had knowledge and it was more fun because of the experience I gained by training.

As a group we want to be inclusive however, we want YOU and OTHERS to enjoy the journey.

Here’s some things to think about if you want to hike 🥾🥾

1. What is your fitness level?
If you don’t normally walk or exercise on any level going on a 3-5 mile hike probably isn’t the place to start.
If this is where you are, fitness wise, please consider, a walking program before jumping into hiking which includes distance and elevation gain. Remember we learn to walk before we can run.
If you do want to join a hike and you have concerns about your fitness and speed, you should consider a buddy at your same level and drive your own vehicle to the trailhead. My cousin once told me in a southern drawl, “Cherieeeeee, you have a lot of power by driving your own wheels!”

2. Proper hiking attire.
If you’re a beginner and you don’t have boots, socks, backpack, or hydration system… here are some ideas.
Wear good tennis shoes made for walking or running.

Wear good socks that you know don’t slip in your shoe when you’re active. Therefore , preventing blisters.

Grab your kids back pack.
Make sure you have a plenty of water either water bottles or Nalgene bottle.

Make a first aid kit. All you need to do is grab one or two of each item such as Band aids, alcohol wipes, a small manicure scissor, wrap tape, triple antibiotic cream, piece of mole skin, etc.
include travel size
Sunscreen
bug repellent
Wet wipes
Chap stick
Keep in mind everything you take adds weight.

Hiking is a great sport

Hiking is not an expensive sport to get started.

Hiking is a lot of fun spending time with other people that share the love of outdoors.

Hikers like any other sport need to be prepared both physically and with proper equipment before getting out there.

Below are pictures of the upcoming hike to Loch Leven Lakes.
The trail is approximately 7.5 miles.
The elevation gain is 1,538 feet over 3.25 miles. The trailhead begins at 6,000 ft. Air is thinner when you begin.
This hike is rated as HARD!
This isn’t meant to scare you but make an educated decision.
🥾♥️🥾
