Let’s talk about being a TNR volunteer without being pushy.

First and foremost, if someone isn't interested in TNR, 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘺 𝘪𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥. Sometimes, no amount of explaining, persuading, or educating will change someone's position. 😫 Unless there is a way to trap the cats from an adjoining property where you have permission, there are times when you simply have to move on.

But sometimes, not pushing is exactly what allows someone to eventually come around and here's a successful example for you... 👇👇👇

In the summer of 2020, we trapped at a location where there were 5️⃣ cats. On our first attempt, we caught 2️⃣ of them. After we released those two, we were told by the property owner that she didn't want us to trap anymore cats there. We respected her wishes, but we had a plan. Muwhahaha!

She was on a fixed income so we continued our visits to bring her food donations. We didn't lecture her. We didn't pressure her. We simply stayed present. Then, naturally... this conversation happened!

Me: How are your kitties doing?

Her: They are doing really, really good. I didn’t see them for about a week and I thought they weren’t coming back or that maybe they had gone off somewhere to die, but you know what? They both came back and they eat here everyday.

Me: Aw, that’s great!

Her: And you know what else? The male one you caught, you know, the black and white fluffy one? He used to leave all the time and now he always stays right out front on the porch. He used to fight with that big yellow cat and now he don’t pay him no mind.

Me: So, is it okay if we come back and get the rest of them?

Her: Yes, that’ll be fine. You know, it gets lonesome here sometimes and when the weather is nice I like to sit on the front porch with them.

Me: I’m so glad they have you and you have them.

TNR advocacy is sometimes about planting a seed. 𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙩'𝙨 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙨.

Why does it seem like so many people are looking for kittens that are simply “free” or “someone needs to get rid of them”, but not necessarily looking for 𝙑𝙀𝙏𝙏𝙀𝘿 kittens⁉️

Do you really want to bring home a kitten who hasn't been vaccinated against common illnesses? Do you want to risk bringing contagious diseases into your home that could spread to the other pets you already love? Of course not!

Are you able to take on the cost of vaccines, veterinary care, and spay/neuter yourself and potentially wait weeks or months for an appointment???

Kittens can go into heat and become 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘴 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘴 4 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘴 𝘰𝘭𝘥. 😱😱 A young cat can slip out the door during mating season, driven by instincts they don't understand, and suddenly you have an unplanned pregnancy on your hands.

❌ Then may find yourself posting “free kittens” too. ❌
And just like that, the cycle continues. 💔

How can you 🄲🄷🄰🄽🄶🄴 that vicious cycle?? 👇🏽👇🏽

✅ Adopt from a reputable shelter or rescue whenever possible. ✅ Choose a kitten who has received appropriate veterinary care. ✅ Ask questions.
✅ Make sure they are vaccinated, flea-treated, dewormed, and have at least have a plan for spay/neuter.

And if you're getting a kitten from someone giving them away, 𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘 𝗗𝗢𝗡'𝗧 𝗟𝗘𝗧 "𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘" 𝗕𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗬 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦.
Because that kitten isn't really free if they come with preventable illness, unexpected veterinary expenses, an unplanned litter, or a lifetime of consequences.

🛑 STOP THE CYCLE.



Being a good pet owner starts 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘬𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦.

Please Opt To Adopt! Most rescue cats come spayed/neutered and current on necessary vaccinations for a small adoption fee, saving money! And always make sure to spay and neuter community cats or the "I just feed it cat" to humanely reduce the numbers needing rescue help!

An 83 year old woman disappeared from her own property near Wadebridge, and the thing that ended the search was a cat standing in a gateway.

She went missing on a Saturday afternoon in August 2021. Within about an hour her neighbors knew something was wrong and started looking. There was nothing obvious to go on.

Her neighbor Tamar Longmuir noticed the cat.

Piran is black, named for St Piran, who is generally reckoned the patron saint of Cornwall, and he is unusually attached to the woman who owns him. He was in the gateway of a maize field, going back and forth across it and meowing. Not sitting. Pacing, and calling.

Nobody had searched the maize field. There was no reason to. The crop was tall and dense and there was no path into it.

Longmuir went in anyway, pushed through the maize, and shouted.

Something answered. Very faint, and coming from below.

She had gone through a barbed wire fence at the far edge of the field and dropped down a steep embankment into a stream at the bottom of a ravine. She had been down there for hours, in water, unable to climb out and barely able to make herself heard.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue came out with their specialist water rescue team. South Western Ambulance came. Cornwall Air Ambulance came. They ran a rope line down the embankment, packaged her onto a stretcher, hauled her up the slope and flew her to hospital. She was in stable condition.

Longmuir told Sky News what everybody was thinking. Without the cat at that gate, "it could have been hours later that I or anyone else would have checked there."

Bodmin Police put out a statement about the rescue. It ran through the agencies involved, the location and the outcome, and included the line "Piran the cat saved the day," which is not standard police phrasing.

The BBC ran it. NPR ran it. CBS ran it.

Piran has not commented.
