Dear Pool Supporters:

Below is your July Update on what is happening with the new pool and park project (information provided by Jason Ledbetter, City Manager). I have also included ways you can help us move this project forward at the end of the email.

July Project Update
Sales Tax Measure: The sales tax measure language will be on the City Council agenda on Tuesday, July 19th and again on Tuesday, August 2nd before sending to the County Clerk to be placed on the ballot. (Note: There is a small group currently working on developing the campaign to get it passed and we will need your assistance! You will find ways you can help us get the measure passed at the end of this email.)

Property Purchase: The property negotiation has started and the City is currently having an EPA brownfields phase 1 done on the property to clear environmental concerns before purchase.

Design Consultant: The City is also working on getting a consultant in to present the options on design with the $8.5 million.

Where we need your help:
Below is a list of where we will need your help in moving the pool/park project forward:
1. Attend the July 19th City Council Meeting: The next action for the City Council is the approval of the resolution to get the sales tax measure on the November ballot. If you can attend the Council meeting, that would be terrific! I will send out the agenda for the meeting when it is published.
2. Add your name to the list of individuals endorsing the sales tax measure: We are looking at getting a long list of individuals and organizations who are endorsing the passage of the sales tax measure. This list will be included in the YES campaign materials. I will send out a separate email on how you can add your name to the list.
3. Save time to talk to your neighbors in September/October: We will be needing individuals to promote the "YES on the sales tax measure" by talking to their neighbors. We will be making assignments and conducting training in September (on weekends beginning after Labor Day weekend). If you can walk your own street, that would be great. More information on the process will be distributed in late August.

We are currently working on our campaign to ensure the passing of the 1/2 cent sales tax that will be on the November ballot. This tax will generate approximately $900,000 annually, did you know that 67% of sales tax paid in Yreka comes from people passing thru and that Yreka residents make up the other 33%? There seems to be a lot of misinformation circulating, please, if you questions or would like clarification on something send us a message and we will get back to you! Thank you for all of the continued support!

We Did It!!! Thank you Yreka City Council for going forward with the plan for the new pool- and park!!!! Now we all need to vote in November for the sales tax!

Kids First! It's Time to Fund Parks & Recreation

Dear Yreka Swim Center and Native Park Supporters:

We are still working on the pool project and we need your help! Here is some background and an update and ACTION NEEDED:

Background: The state grant of $8.5 million for Yreka Swim Center & Native Park was announced on December 8, 2021 and the Yreka City Council accepted it at their meeting of December 21, 2021. Over the past two months, the city staff have been discussing the on-going maintenance and operations costs so the City Council meeting can decide whether to go forward with the pool project.

Update: The City staff members have now determined the on-going cost of the maintenance and operation of the pool. And, this item comes up to the City Council at their meeting on Tuesday, April 5th at 6:30pm. This is the time the Council will determine a GO / NO GO on the construction of the pool.

(Note: To cover the cost of maintenance and operations, several of us community members are proposing having a 1/2 cent sales tax - which would generate about $900,000 per year and is enough revenue to fund the operation of the new pool AND create a Parks and Recreation Department within the City. This needs to be passed by the voters of the city - possibly on the ballot in a November 2022 election.)

ACTION NEEDED:
We now need YOU to:
1) show up and speak about going forward with the pool project at the Tuesday, April 5th (6:30pm) Council meeting, (talking points at the end of the email) and
2) contact the Council members BEFORE the meeting to express your opinion (contact information below)
It is best to have as many of you as possible to show up to provide your thoughts. I am planning to talk about putting Kids First in our community and creating a parks and recreation department supported by a 1/2 cent sales tax. This new pool and park facility will revitalize our community!

Here are the meeting details:

Some talking points for Kids First! It's Time to Fund Parks and Recreation
To revitalize our community: Let's build the Yreka Swim Center and Native Park and invest in Yreka and become an attactive location for health professionals, teachers, etc. with young families - give them great recreational opportunities.
To make our kids safer: Create the opportunity for every child to learn to swim! We have so many bodies of water in our area that it is important for them to learn to swim and be safe!
To add a park where none exists: There are no parks on the east side of Interstate 5. The state of California is providing these funds to fund parks where there are none, and that is why this location on Foothill Drive - two blocks from the YMCA - was selected. (Note: we did try to get funding to remodel Ringe, but lost about 30 out of 100 points due to the many parks in the area and the proposal was not funded)
And, to cover operational costs: Place a 1/2 cent sales tax measure on the November 2022 ballot to support a Yreka Parks and Recreation Department, which includes pool maintenance and operations. This would raise about $900,000 per year and be supported by anyone who purchases items in Yreka. (For purchasers, this would be 5 cents for every $10 spent on taxable items - note that most grocery items are non-taxable

Reminder as of 3/17/2022
This is a reminder to mark your calendars for April 5th at 6:30pm, City Hall Council Chambers. This meeting holds importance because the city WILL DECIDE whether or not to move forward with the project. This is the final say and our final opportunity to provide our community with the aquatics facility it needs and deserves! Please come and let your voices of support be heard! It is time to put our kids first and make this happen.
If you cannot make this meeting, you can show your support from home by liking and sharing this post!
Thank you so much!

Dear Yreka Pool Supporters:

Reminder: We need your input on the creation of a new aquatic center and park! We are applying for a HIGHLY competitive state grant and would love your ideas on what a new aquatic center/park should look like. This is a new park at a location on Foothill Drive (see map attached).

Please plan to attend at least one of the Zoom or in-person meetings listed below. And, bring your kids! The park is for the family and their ideas would be terrific!

We will be meeting in small groups to get your ideas on: 1) RECREATIONAL FEATURES, 2) SAFETY FEATURES, 3) BEAUTIFICATION, and 4) THEME for the new aquatic center/park.

So be thinking about what you might like to see! Attached is the agenda for the meetings as well as the input form and drawing template (you can also just use a blank sheet of paper for the drawing). A map of the proposed location is also attached.

Dear Yreka Pool Supporters:

As most of you are hopefully aware, we are working on a California Parks and Recreation grant for a new pool/park complex and need your help! As we mentioned in an earlier email, to be competitive for this funding we needed to change the site to a different location (without any parks within a half mile, for example). A new site was identified off Foothill Drive (across from Meeks Lumber) which met the grant criteria (map attached). For this new park/pool complex, we need your help in developing ideas for what it should look like!

Community Input: As we are proposing this new park, we need all of your ideas! We have five community meetings coming up (three via Zoom and two outdoors) and would love to have at least 25-30 community members at each meeting. So, please ask your friends and family to attend! Here are the dates:
