Strong businesses are grown in Siskiyou. Starting in 1995, the Jopson Family started Mountain Crest Gardens understanding that Siskiyou County could provide the ideal climate to grow cold-hearty succulents. Today, the locally owned business is one of the largest online direct-to-consumer succulent sellers in the United States. Vice President Matts Jopson shares the Mountain Crest Gardens story.

In 2023, the Siskiyou Economic Development Council (SEDC) was awarded $5 million from the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) to administer their Healthy Soils Block Grant Pilot Program (HSP).

This program gives funding directly to Siskiyou County agriculture producers to implement healthy soils practices on their operations.

Two voices bringing real-world livestock, ranch business, and range experience to the North Fork California Meat Summit.

Dan Macon is a UC Cooperative Extension Livestock and Natural Resources Advisor for the Central Sierra. As a first-generation rancher and former direct-to-consumer producer, Dan brings technical knowledge and firsthand experience to the economic and personal decisions involved in running a livestock operation.

Kasey DeAtley is a sixth-generation Shasta County rancher and Professor of Animal and Range Sciences at the CSU, Chico College of Agriculture. Her work connects beef cattle genetics, range management, applied research, and agricultural leadership.

Together, Dan and Kasey will help attendees connect lessons from the tours with practical decisions they can apply to their own operations and organizations.

Siskiyou Economic Development’s AJ Brown and UC Cooperative Extension’s Laurie Wayne will co-lead “From the Ground Up: Developing Agritourism in Your Region” at the California Agritourism Summit on September 23.

They’ll share lessons from the California Open Farm Passport, including Siskiyou Farm Co.'s Harvest & Bloom, to explore how regional partnerships can help farms welcome visitors and share their agricultural stories.
