At Ypsilanti Township Fire Department, becoming a firefighter doesn't end on your first day, it begins there.
Every new firefighter spends their first year as a Probationary Firefighter, a time dedicated to learning the job, mastering the skills, earning the trust of their crew, and proving they have what it takes to proudly serve our community. Throughout that year, probationary firefighters at YTFD wear a green leather shield on the front of their helmet, a tradition that signifies they are still earning their place.
The probationary year is one of the most challenging periods in a firefighter's career. It demands countless hours of training, studying, physical work, and a commitment to excellence every single day. It's about more than learning how to fight fires or respond to emergencies, it's about being pushed to your limit while still demonstrating integrity, humility, teamwork, and a willingness to put others before yourself.
Only after successfully completing that first year do firefighters earn the privilege of replacing their green shield with their permanent firefighter shield—a symbol that they have met the standard expected by their department and their brothers and sisters in the fire service.
Today, IAFF Local 1830 is proud to congratulate Firefighters Tyler and Jason on reaching this important milestone. During the ceremony, each firefighter was pinned with their badge by someone they personally chose to share in this unforgettable moment, making the occasion even more meaningful.
Congratulations, Tyler and Jason. Your hard work, dedication, and perseverance have paid off, and you've earned the respect that comes with wearing your permanent shield.
Welcome to the tradition and thank you for your commitment to serving Ypsilanti Township community with pride, honor, and professionalism.
Congratulations, Brothers! 🚒🔥

YTFD responded to 55 calls on July 3rd with only 7 firefighters on duty. We desperately need to increase the daily minimum staffing of 6 firefighters for the community’s safety and ours.

In a time of growing run volume it’s always nice to see a department increase staffing to answer the demand. Nice work and City of Ypsilanti Professional Firefighters Local 401

INCREASED MINIMUM STAFFING

Today marks the first minimum staffing increase for the Ypsilanti Fire Department in at least 5 decades. Thanks to the work of Local 401 members in conjunction with city officials including Fire Chief Ken Hobbs and City Manager Andrew Hellenga staffing will now be a minimum of 5 firefighters instead of the previous 4. This will be on a trial basis from July through September to assess efficiency and cost. With almost 30% run volume increase in the last 5 years, this is a much needed step in the right direction. Though this is currently a trial, we’re confident that the increased staffing will result in a better service to the residents and visitors of Ypsilanti and there will be no reduction in staffing. We’d like to thank the city as well as all members of Local 401 who have prioritized increasing service to our city.

Shift 2 received a call for a small animal rescue operation yesterday afternoon. Engine 4 responded to the scene and discovered a fawn deer trapped in a basement well window. Crews successfully climbed down and retrieved the uninjured fawn, subsequently reuniting it with its mother, who was patiently waiting in the nearby field behind the residence.
