This past Sunday, our EmpowerED Fall 2026 season began!

Our FREE Roots & Wings Elementary Fall 2026 Workshops began again on Sunday!

We welcomed new young writers and some of our past workshop participants for a fantastic kick off to this season's literary arts programs.

We started with a wonder game of names, introducing ourselves to one another, before reading Mary Oliver's "Some Questions You Might Ask." We made collages, enjoyed snacks, and indeed asked some questions, exploring the art of poetry and collage, each a kind of act of deconstruction and recreation.

Beyond the Binary's Sunday Salons are back!

This past Sunday, our LGBTQ+ youth writers and artists reunited and welcomed a few new young writers to join in the creative exploration of literary arts.

Our session began with a two-part writing prompt. We dug right in, uncovering characters we encounter in popular-culture, choosing one we identify with and / or feel opposite from, considering what we relate to as well as what we don't. We shared sample poems and our instructors shared selected zines for inspiration. Then, students wrote a new piece imagining themselves encountering that selected character in a specific environment, and explored specificity, relation, and identity, with a collaborative sharing of works.

Many thanks to our instructors Aryana Jharia, Reese Taylor, Gwen Galvin, and Jeff Kass, plus our incredible student mentors Lu and Zack/Mackenzie alongside our newest participants. We are so happy to be joining together with the wondrous community who've made this creative and vital program possible.

Our FREE Beyond the Binary year-round programs have been brought to our young people by generous support of Find Your Light Foundation, Dzanc Books, and curriculum curation from the Flying Object Youth Writing Initiative.

Students will have the opportunity to get published seasonally through our award-winning press, Dzanc Books, and in-house multimedia showcases, and they will also receive professional mentorship from LGBTQ+ writers, poets, editors, and artists!

Workshops will be held on the second Sunday of each month from 11:30 am to 1 pm:

What happens when we dare to imagine the world not as we fear it, but as we desire it?

This past Spring 2026 season, our Beyond the Binary LGBTQ+ Youth Workshops sat down with an incredible circle of voices—artist Aryana Jharia, poet Cam Finch, mentor Reese Taylor, Mackenzie Dunsmore, Lu Konnet, and WCBN's own Mia Lambert—for a conversation that moves through prairie grasses and bright doors, oceanic tides and brand-new ways of seeing ourselves.

This episode is about change. About belonging. About the radical, joyful act of picturing what comes next—and building it.
